Favorite kid-interesting RV parks in Washington / north Oregon?
Yahoo Message Number: 19936
OK, now I am just dying to take some trips in my new (used) LD.  I have two boys - ages 2.5 and 4.  Can anyone recommend some good RV parks to do "quick" trips to with kids?  I don't have a car that I can tow, so there needs to be some cool stuff to do right from the RV park.  Or a destination that's close and easy to drive the RV to.

Thanks in advance! .Terri

HI Terri! My sister lives in Vancouver WA, and loves to take her grandkids (ages 3 and 6) to the campground at Mt. Hood. There are full hookups and lots to do for kids, even an indoor swimming pool! Hope this helps, Denise Shook, the Irish Dancer Happy ST. Pat's Day!

Terri,
Last summer I camped with my brother and nephew (without a motorhome) at Lost Lake state park.  You get there by heading up the Columbia River Gorge from Portland to Hood River and then head south into the mountains (Ask for directions in Hood River).

The lake is beautiful with a great view of Mt. Hood.  They have RV sites and rest rooms (I don't think they have hookups).  You can rent boats, walk around the lake, etc.  Make sure to bring hot dogs and buckets for your sons to catch the crawdads under the dam.

Summer is the best time.

enjoy,

I'm in California, so can't offer any specifics, but Washington and Oregon have many great national parks, state parks and forest service campgrounds. Some of our best vacations with our son (now in college), when he was that age, were with a friend along to locations like that, especially on a lake somewhere (usually Tahoe in our case). I encourage you to take your children to these more rustic campgrounds where, by and large, they will figure out their own fun.

Later, when he was in middle school and early high school and into golf, we had a couple of great vacations traveling the west and midwest in search of minor league baseball and cheap golf. I located ballparks and schedules and good but cheap golf courses on the Web and created an itinerery that took us from one to the next, camping wherever convenient nearby and seeing other sights along the way.
Took some planning but great family fun. We rarely stayed in RV parks, choosing campgrounds instead.
I really recommend a baseball vacation. There is even a book by that title to help you: Fodor's Baseball Vacations: Great Family Trips to Minor League and Classic Major League Ballparks Across America by Bruce Adams, Margaret Engel. The minors leagues are much more fun for kids than the majors and a lot cheaper.

I don't know how far you want to drive, but there are a lot of places real close that are great for short trips.  We find ourselves returning to Whidbey Island again and again.  There are a number of State Parks on the Island, and a couple of RV parks.  We were just at Fort Casey last weekend. Great spot. The sites are right on the water, and the kids will love the Fort.  If you want, you can walk on the ferry to Port Townsand for the day.  No hookups though.

Another kind of strange place is the Oak Harbor City Beach Trailer park.  It is kind-of a parking lot, but they have full hook-ups, great views of the harbor, a nice beach and GREAT play equipment for the kids. (Some of it right at the sites, and some of it a ways down the beach).  In the summer they have kids swimming and wading pools.
It is one of my kids' favorite spots.  My sister has little ones as well, and they like this spot.  It is also walking distance to shopping.

If you want to be real close to home for your first trip, there is Kayak Point County Park.  It is just north of Marysville.  It has a beautiful beach, but it is a bit of a hike down there.  They have electric, but no water and no sewer dump.  You can dump at the South Everett Park and Ride on your way home.

There is also Tolt MacDonald Park on the river in Carnation. They have no hookups.  We have never been there because we are not sure where we would dump before coming home.  As far as we can tell the closest place is North Bend.  This park is going to be getting hookups soon, maybe even this summer.

I could go on and on.  It may rain a lot here, but there sure are a lot of camping options close by; great thing to have with gas prices the way they are.

Have fun!
