Used LD Pricing

I know that when pricing a used LD you can't really go by what is listed in NADA, however, what is considered a reasonable price for a used LD.  I have looked on the database and can't find exactly what I'm looking for.  Here is what I am considering:  A 1987 LD 22' rear lounge with 52,000 miles.  New tires, solar panel, generator, microwave, swamp cooler, etc.  Fully loaded.  Asking price between 15,000 and 16,500.  Is this unreasonable or a fair market value? Thanks.

I bought almost exactly the unit you're considering a month ago -- '87 rear lounge with 65,000 miles, similarly equipped.  It does not have the solar panels but it does have roof air.  After a month of going over it and fixing small things, I would describe the motorhome as in excellent condition.  I paid $10,000 -- and feel I got an especially good buy.
Before finding mine, I tracked the price of used Lazy Dazes for about five months on about a dozen Web sites.  I plotted each asking price on a graph by year and price and developed an "asking price arc." Over a period of five months, I found exactly four 1987s for sale.
They ranged in price from $9,000 to $12,000.  For an '88, the price jumps on average to about $14,000.  For an '89 the price jumps to about $16,500.

I came to two general conclusions.  First, after a certain age, the price tends to flatten out.  Because of the quality of the Lazy Daze and the demand for them, there's pretty much a threshold below which price does not go.  Between '83 and '89, the prices tend to clump in the $8,000 to $14,000 range and the individual price depends on the mileage and condition.
Second, price is affected greatly by location.  I bought my Lazy Daze in Texas where very few are for sale and there are relatively few buyers.  In the Los Angeles area, for obvious reasons, there are many more LDs for sale and many more buyers after them, which on my chart resulted in a generally slightly higher price for a used LD.

My conclusion would be that your seller is asking $2-$3,000 over average asking price.  But if it's close to you, is exactly what you want and after inspections turns out to be in very good condition, then maybe it's worth it.  In time you could undoubtedly find one for less -- but you might have the expense of traveling to see it, buy it and drive it back home.  Those are all considerations I faced, living in Texas, which is one reason I waited to try and find one in Texas -- and got lucky.

All the best, Lyle

I would like to thank both you and oryoki for your responses to my question.  I feel the price is a little high and I have not seen the LD yet.  It is only about 30 miles from my home and yes it is the one listed from Sacramento.  The person selling it says he is in no hurry to sell it and says he his pretty firm in his asking price.  He apparently has had a number of calls from people trying to buy it for less. Hope to get a chance to see it soon.  Will ask for records of repairs etc., just to make sure it has been well maintained.  It sounds like he may be the second owner.  Thanks again, Pat

I paid 22,000 in Jun 02 for a 1991 22ft  with 49,000 - it needed 4 new tires and had no solar panel. Be prepared to add 2-4,000 in mechanical repairs.
