New owner (2000 LD 26.5 Mid-Bath) - any advice?
Yahoo Message Number: 19900
I just purchased a 2000 LD 26.5 Mid-bath.

I completely lucked into it - had just decided that I wanted a LD for sure, decided on the 26.5 mid-bath, then found out from LD that the wait time was ~8 months!  Starting looking at the advertised LDs on this forum (which I'd checked once before, when I wasn't so serious) and saw that there was a new listing for *exactly* the model I wanted, only 3 years old, and right here in my home city (Seattle, WA).  Wow!  I called, and it hadn't been sold yet, though there was someone who was in the process of trying to get it, but the owner had told them that she wasn't pulling it off the market, so she let me have a look.  I couldn't believe my luck!

I drove over the same day to look at "Kitty" and the rest is history.  She's in great shape, just under 30K miles and really well maintained.  She drives like a dream.  I have two young boys - 4 yrs and 2.5 yrs and now I am just trying to figure out where we'll take Kitty first.

Anyone who has tips on LDs, and this model in particular I would love to hear them.  This is my first RV and I've only taken one trip in an RV prior to this - a rental Class C.  I enjoyed the trip, but decided that rentals are an iffy thing.  :>

Excited to have gotten an LD on such short notice, and eager to learn how to make the most of my new vehicle.

Hi Terri. Congratulations on your purchase.

1. Have the rig weighed at a commercial scale company. Perhaps a  moving van and storage company in your area has a scale. I would  weigh the front axle and the rear axle. You might also want to do  side to side.

2. Check the wear pattern on the front tires. You may need to have a  wheel alignment performed.

3. How many hours on the genset? There should be 2 hours per month  since it was placed in service. At 50 hours there is a maintenance  procedure to be done.

4. The air conditioner and refrigerator should have had annual
 maintenance performed. Check that.

Terri,

Congrats on your new LD!  When we got ours, we were also new to the world of RV's.  We also have 2 kids, 4 & 7, boys.  For our 1st trip, we decided to go somewhere close to home.  We also decided to make it a short trip, we left Friday after work and returned Sunday afternoon.  This was our shake-down run.  That short little trip taught us a great deal.  What we forgot to pack, what we should have packed, what we shouldn't have packed.
You can get a lot of advice and info on this, and other, lists, but everybody's needs are a little different.  So don't think you may have all the tips you need after reading everything there is to know about rv's.
Kids have a funny way deciding what you need.
A short story for you.  For our first trip, we thought we had everything we needed and were prepared for anything the kids would throw at us.  Not more than 1 hour after we got there, the kids proved us wrong.  Our boys were playing at the playground, which was close to our site (something to look for or ask about with kids).  I was setting up our site, when all of sudden, I hear my youngest crying.  I look over to see our older boy escorting him back to our site.  As he gets closer, I can see lots of blood.
Trying stay calm so as not to get my son even more upset, my wife and I start cleaning him up to see where the blood is coming from.  It turns out his lip got a nice cut and his nose was bleeding pretty bad.  He fell down on the playground equipment and smacked his face on something.  His lip began to swell, so my wife tells me, "did you pack ice?"  Uhhh, no.  So off I went, asking fellow campers for ice.  I eventually got some, but it taught us to always have ice cubes with us.  Ice is something you think you don't need if you have a fridge keeping everything nice and cold for you.  Of all the lists of things to bring I ever saw, none had ice on the list.
With our 1st trip starting off like that, it was amazing that we were able to turn it around and have a nice time anyway.  Of course my wife had a harder time than I did.

I'm sure your 1st trip will go a lot better than mine. :-)

From personal experience, I have found a package of frozen peas (marked as first aid peas) work better than ice.  It forms to the body part that it is placed on and doesn't drip water on everything.  And as long as they are marked so you don't eat them, they can be refrozen over and over.  Another option is to freeze water in a dixie cup.  Then you can just peel the paper down as the ice melts and it provides some insulation while holding the cup.

You can also purchase the reusable hot/cold pack at Walmart or similar. I just picked up another one for $6.97. It is 6x9 inches and comes with a mesh pouch and has 2ft of elastic wrap with velcro.
I keep mine in the pouch in lg ziplock in the freezer at home all the time . The gel pack can be heated in water on the stove top or in a pan of water in the micro if heat is needed instead of ice. I believe it comes in a smaller and a larger size but I found this size works great for my back as well as knee's etc.

And here I though I was the only one that did that! :)

Kathi,
Yup, a bag of peas does work great.  It's what a doctor suggested to me after a very sensitive operation.  It worked great.  Cubes would have killed me. :-)  I think a bag of frozen peas will be standard packing now.

We did do the dixie cup thing, but that wasn't going to help for a few hours.  But at least we had ice for later that night and the next day.
