Serious paint problem on new LD
Yahoo Message Number: 19947
My 2003 26.5 RB has developed a serious problem in the white paint on the nose cap fiberglass. The paint seems to have separated from the fiberglass or under coat. It has formed ripples in the paint.
The paint is soft such that you can press a thumb print into it.
From a distance it looks like condensation formed on the nose cap.
The black paint of the "windows" looks fine and the Lazy Daze decal looks fine except that the white paint around it is rippled. The problem extends over the entire fiberglass area. The metal parts look okay.

I am sure this has deteriorated over time. I do not believe the problem was visible when I left the factory. I don't know if it will continue to get worse and start peeling off.
I called Steve at the factory and it seems the only option I have is to return and have them look at it and repaint or replace the entire nose cap. Very disappointing for me as CA is a long long way away and it will be sometime before I am able to schedule a trip to get this fixed.

In the meantime, this is a cosmetic problem and not a very good  for Lazy Dazes.

How awful! Sounds as if some step was omitted in prepping the surface before painting. And what a pain to have to return to CA for a fix!
Meantime, I'd suggest that you take pictures and send them to Steve, just so the factory is aware of how serious the problem is. Get as close as you can, and shoot when the sun is coming across the painted surface at a low, raking angle--that will make the bumps show up better.
Let's hope this was an isolated incident. In any case, I'm sure the Newtons will be anxious to make it perfect, especially once they see the extent of the problem.

Linda, how disappointing.  LD will stand behind their product but it is inconvenient.  Can you take it somewhere else and LD pay?  Doesn't hurt to ask - perhaps you have?

I'm curious WHEN you picked up your LD?  Like in the winter when it wasn't warm and the paint didn't have a chance to set in good?  I'm thinking of "painting houses".  I know that LD has a shed they do the painting in but yet it has to be warm outside to set it up.

Just food for thought -- and I certainly empahtize w/ you.

Picked her up on Jan 6 and she has never experienced extreme temps either way, as I drove from CA to South TX and I'm still in TX.

Steve Newton, doesn't know what the problem is. Says it's never happened before, wants to see it and is fearful of having someone else try to repair/repaint it. Worst case is that it needs a whole new front cap. We don't know if it is the paint, primer or the fiberglass. Note: the problem is only with the white paint. The black "window" seems fine. So far!! Also, the painted metal parts are fine.

Thanks for the suggestion Andy. I took pictures today. Don't know how they will turn out (don't have a digital camera yet). The problem has been registered with Steve at LD both by phone and email so it is dated as I may not be able to get back there for awhile. I just hope it doesn't start peeling and looking REALLY awfull! At least I won't have rust problems on fiberglass! :) Linda
