Halogen lights
In both of our LDs, I have used aircraft style lights above the couch and seats.
JC Whitney supplied the light assemblies. The 1003 bulbs were remove and replaced with MR-11 halogen bulbs, using an adaptor to switch from the single-pin, bayonet base to a the bi-pin plugs on the MR-11s

10 and 20 watt MR-11 bulbs   Available at HD ands Lowes

http://www.bulbco.com/halogenmr11.html> 10-watt bulbs are more than adequate for most situations. I do have one 20-watt light for detail work and is rarely needed.

We have used Hella aircraft-style halogen lights in both of our LDs and previous camper van.
5-watts is perfect for a bunk light.

In the early nineties, small halogen bulbs (MR-11), with built in reflectors, became commonly available. I built several dozen mountain-bike lights using them with.
A 10 or 20-watt flood was used on the handlebars and a 35-watt bulb mounted on the helmet. Awesome for high-speed night riding.
I used C and D-cell Ni-Cad battery packs for power along with solid-state smart chargers.
I also built several 35 and 50-watt waterproof flashlights for nighttime use in our kayaks.
Our biggest worry when paddling at night is being run over, unseen, by a powerboat.
A 50-watt spot will get the attention of approaching powerboats

LEDs
I find LEDs presently to be best suited for area lighting. The colors are just too alien for reading.  The alien colors of LEDs are very noticeable when used in taillights.

We primarily use LEDs for exterior illumination.

"I've often wondered if people see things the same. For instance your description of the fluorescents as greenish-tinged. I've never observed that."
People do see things differently, and on top of that, our brain does a pretty good job of compensating for off-color lighting. But I can cite objective evidence. :-) Try shooting a photo by fluorescent light, and you'll see that it turns out greenish (unless your camera compensates, of course).

That's no surprise, because if you look at the spectrum chart for a "cool white" fluorescent bulb*, you'll see big spikes in the green and blue regions. If the light were really white, the spectral graph would be flat.

In short, you may not notice the greenish-blue tint, thanks to your eye/brain system's ability to compensate, but it's definitely there. :-)

In the event that anyone might be interested in the reading lights I purchased here is the link:
 http://www.12vledlights.com/viewitem.php/12vledlights/pd1974689/12V_Whit\ e_Puck_Light_Halogen_
They come in gold, chrome and white. Click on the "puck lights" button on the left to see the others. I bought halogen because I don't like leds for reading). Total price for two with shipping was $19.42, less than the price of one light from Lazy Daze.

Cindy, thanks for posting the link.  Question:  Since these lights are non-directional, are you, and anyone else who has these lights, satisfied with their functionality?

Bob & Mary,

I can't say what the temps will be, but there's a good chance the sun will be shinning.  If you need a place to park while you are in town, let me know.  I have plenty of space to park another LD.  I can even offer you a 15 amp hookup.  I live in the north/west part of town, maybe it's close to your kids? Anyway, have a good trip out here.
