New wannabes with a few questions
Yahoo Message Number: 19514
Hi we are wannabes too, Sharon and Bill from Annapolis MD.  We have be looking for MH's in anticipation of a breakaway in a few years, and/or some travels in the summer, if we buy one now.  We saw a LD in a parking lot and we were so impressed by the outside, that we got right on line and checked it out.  Also went to RV consumers, but never bought the book.  Our mind is made up, we are definitely going for the LD.  There are too many wonderful testimonials thanks to the internet, and people who take the time to share their experiences etc.
We also are catching up on the chats.  Just joined a few days ago.  I think I will keep a log of the faucet and table ideas.
I do have a few questions for anyone who can respond.  Is the bed over the cab actually comfortable enough for every night sleep?  I know comfort is a personal thing, but it looks so thin.  Does it compare to a thermarest camping pad for instance?  Also, does anyone know what brand of tires are on  the new LD?  Since we have never seen the inside of the LD except for the video (we ordered), and pictures on the web, we are still undecided what will work for us.
If we can find a late model used one, we may go that route.  The one in Las Vegas sounded good, but we are not quite ready for the purchase, must sell a boat first.      Thanks to All

Hello Sharon and Bill,
I have a 2003 26.5 Mid Bath on order. When I was at the factory last August, I took lots of photos of all the models and the mfg. line.
They are photos of the 2002 models, so the interior colors have changed, but they provide a good description of the various floorplans.
I'd be happy to send them to you if you are interested.  Just drop me an email at mschafir at AOL dot com.  (Unfortunately, Yahoo cuts off email addresses, so you have to spell them out here.).

I find a Thermarest is only as comfortable as whatever is underneath.
The ones we use are about 1.5" thick, and thats only comfortable if you sleep on your back and the ground is flat. Since I always try to sleep on my side, the difference between a thick pad as in the LD is immediately apparent. The ones in newer models are 4" thick dual- density foam, I believe. In older models, some are 6" dual-density.
The quality is tops for the mattress thickness, but firmness is an individual issue.

I feel that the cabover bed is comfortable, firm but comfortable.
Some people in this group have found it too firm or hard but as you've said that is a personal thing and subjective. I haven't slept up there since bringing my LD back to FL from the factory but my daughter does at times and I read to her up there. She also likes me to play up there with her at times. It's more comfortable than camping pads at least IMO.
Ford is supplying Michelin XPS RIB tires on the 2003 E series cutaway chassis since they've finally worked through their Firestone stock and contract. LD has never changed the OEM tires and I doubt they'll ever start doing that.

Good luck! You won't be disappointed with a LD!

Sharon and Bill ,

I forgot to say with respect to the cab-over bed, that the mattress is firm and thus not too thin.  There is no 'bottoming out' effect.
We have slept 6 weeks at a time there and found it to be comfortable.

We did have two problems with the bed, the first being that the wooden storage cabinet at the head under the pillows could be hard if you hit it with your sholder

"Is the bed over the cab actually comfortable enough for every night sleep?"
Works for me. The supplied mattress is firm, as others have noted, and I like a soft mattress, but my (used) LD came with a 2" thick featherbed on top of the regular mattress and that suits me fine. If I didn't have the featherbed, two 1.5" layers of viscoelastic ("memory") foam would do it for me--I sleep on that at home.
I sleep over the cab every night when traveling. Although I could make up the rear couches in my 22 twin/king as a bed, it's so much easier to leave the rear undisturbed and just climb into the "upstairs bedroom!"

Welcome Sharon & Bill!

Congratulations on your decision to get a LD.  You will not be disappointed.

I will give you my opinion in regards to the cab-over bed.  I have only slept up there a few times, but I found it to be very comfortable.  I like a firm mattress and the padding they use is firm.  I would say the mattress is about 4-5 inches thick.

Good luck in your search,

The bed over the cab is most thick, heavy and designed for two large adults.  The new Lazy Daze still come with Firestone tires when I checked two months ago, but not the ones charged in Ford SUV rollovers.

Barry, Not sure if I can reply via my mail, I am new to the group operations.  Actually we live in Arnold, just north of Annapolis and we saw a beige LD in BayHills.  The guy is in your group I believe and his name was David.  He had it parked in parking lot for several days, with his phone # on dash.  We called him hoping to get an invite to look inside, but I think he was off next day to FLA.
We can't seem to make up our mind about the floor plan we like.  How do you like the RB.  I like the way the sofa area is near the driver seat.  If seems more open and spacious.  We are empty nesters and don't have the privacy issues you have with a family, so we were thinking about a RB. Do you use your LD for camping in parks or just traveling around?  Do you routinely sleep in the bed over the cab, or pull out the sofa?  Also, I guess if any one spends the night with you, you will become friendly very fast - just like boating.
Thanks for the invite to see your rig, we will be looking for you.  This group is great.

Sorry, I did not see this mail.  We have thermarest self inflating mattresses, which are designed for backpacking.  They are 2 1/2" when inflated.  I have slept on these on the ground.  The first night was a little rough, but after a week I got use to it.  I don't know how practical these will be, since I would not want to deflate them every day, but they may just stack up there.  With the LD mattress folded is the window in the cab blocked? Also a question I should post.  We are thinking about kayaks, is there an easy mounting rig for this.  After our camping vacations, the LD will seem like a palace.  Thanks again Barry

Check my LD improvement photo site at: http://photos.yahoo.com/lw5315us See 'Kayak Rack'

If your kayaks are light enough, you may be able to eliminate the crane assembly.  I hope to update the photos soon since the present photos are of my old LD. I have rebuilt the rack and made a few improvements on our new LD. I will post when this is done.
The rack mounting method was the one that LD recommended. It has given us years of service without any problems, even with loads of over 300 pounds.

Sharon and Bill,

We are very pleased with the RB floor plan and would select it again.  There are numerous occasions when we say that the panoramic view of a rear-lounge model would be nice, particularly when we are camped by a lake or ocean.  Nevertheless, as you say, we like the open floor plan and would not change.  Like you, there are normally only the two of us.

We have the two barrel chairs, and while the storage under the 'missing' couch would be nice, we really enjoy sitting

The Thermolux foam mattress pad from Camping World is only 1 1/2" thick, and I hesitated to loose that much headroom height

Thanks again for your reply.
It is encouraging to know that above cab does work out.  Someone also mentioned they had a featherbed arrangement. I think I would find that a cozy spot myself.
I did see the kayak pictures, and someone responded about that earlier.  We don't have LD or kayaks, but know it is all possible.
I must admit, I have names and messages all mixed up at this point, but appreciate all the response nevertheless.
About the fake window.  What is the point?  Why bother to make a fake window?  It would be a great place to have a real window.  Thanks Sharon

Barry, Thanks for this reply.  When you travel do you tow a vehicle??  How is the LD to park on parking lots and to get gas at stations?  How is the pick-up going up steep grades?  Most likely we are going to go to factory, but still may look for used one when we are ready. probably this summer.  I know it is near LA., I will need to do some reseach and see how we can work in little vacation while we are there.  Isn't the factory near Joshua tree?  Any suggestions of what to see or do while in the area??  thanks! Sharon

Thanks Larry we will.  We don't have the kayaks yet, but I guarantee you they will be light weight, so that we can easily handle them.  Sharon

"About the fake window. What is the point? Why bother to make a fake window? It would be a great place to have a real window."

Sharon

The older LDs had a front window that, like all Class Cs with front windows, was prone to leaks. It also let in a lot of heat and/or cold. Removing the window was, IMHO, a major improvement. The fake window, according to LD, looks better. Without it, LD says it looks like a moving van. Opinions vary. I would prefer not having the black paint collecting solar heat but there is not choice other than painting over it. They will not delete it, I asked.

Sharon,

We do not tow.  A number of people do, but for us the sheer convenience of being able to arrive at the camp ground, back into the spot, and not worry about the toad is more important than having another vehicle available.  As mentioned earlier, we normally break camp (usually a matter of just disconnecting the electricity and driving off) and use the LD as our vehicle.  I'm not much into 4- wheel drive vehicle type travel any more, but if I were, that would be the only vehicle that would tempt me to tow.  Otherwise the LD does a good job as a '2nd vehicle'.

We find that we nearly always can find 2 end-end parking spaces

Satellite TV connection question

Larry,

Saw your photos of your input connector for your satellite TV dish.  We recently got a system and I've been pondering how to get the connection inside.  I like your idea of mounting it in the propane compartment.  My question is how did you then route the cable up into the interior?

Thanks in advance,

Ted

Ted
I drilled straight up through the floor and installed a through-wall plastic grommet on the bottom (sealed with polyurethane) and one on the top, over the carpet. Find them with TV cable parts at the hardware store. The cable is then routed through a piece of surface mount electrical channel to the valance on the right side shade, up into the overhead cabinet. The same piece of surface mount electrical channel contains the wiring from the shunt up to the Link 10 meter.
I will try to remember to add a photo in the future of the interior installation.

White surface mount electrical channel has a pressure sensitive backing that sticks to the wall. It has a snap edge that locks it closed. It can be pried opened for future access.
It is available in white that matches the wall. Available at HD or Lowes.

Thanks, Larry,

Makes sense to me.  Our TV is below the cabinet over the barrel chair behind the driver's seat, so that's a nice direct route.  I've already used that cahhel to get wires from the plugs on the side of the fold-up table base over and up to the TV.

Thanks for the quick reply.
