Nationwide Broadband Internet Access?

We are longtime Internet users (since 1993) and have learned to rely on the convenience of utility of broadband Internet connectivity in our landlocked home in Iowa. When we begin traveling, we will hope to hopefully find some kind of wireless broadband connection covering north America right in our motorhome. Any ideas? If nothing is available now, you must believe that something with a high degree of utility is on the horizon.
Our laptop will be our communications and MP3 machine. Our cellular phone will be our phone number for family and friends. Your thoughts?

Kent,

About the only service provider I'm aware of that is downlink & uplink wireless is StarBand (http://www.starband.com). They use 18" dish technology.

It's pricey at $70/mo plus about $400 for the equipment package and it can also be used for DISH Network satellite television although I didn't see any pricing on that part of the service.

I read in the paper yesterday that DiretTV was supposed to introduce a competitive service sometime this year so that may well have a downward effect on pricing.

We live (?) in Michigan, and Dish PC has just been made available through the Best Buy discount electronics/appliance chain.

Dish PC is a branch of the Dish TV folks.

The antenna system for combined DishPC/TV is slightly wider than the circular 18" dish used for the TV. It consists of two siamesed segments with two feeds. They point along slightly different azimuths because the PC satellite is in a different location than the TV satellite.
It looks like you can "see" both the broad band internet connection and the TV relay at the same time.

I think that the hardware price for the combined TV/PC system is just a bit higher than that of the TV alone ( costs about $50/month; and the TV subscriiptions are unchanged, with lots of more and more expensive options.

We would like to be able to drive and surf at the same time and have not checked up on the automatic TV tracking antennas.

This thread reminds us that we need to make a decision on our Lazy Daze antenna installation soon. I'd rather have the factory install the system so that it will be well done, but it seems like the technology is moving so fast that we can count on changing antennas and amplifiers a few times in the life with the new rig.

We HAVE to have the ability to send photos of our stops to our poor, still-working friends.

We are talking broadband Internet everywhere at at least DSL speeds, right? We will be at the factory on Feb. 7th. We will also ask while there. You probably would want to make sure you order a laptop with a combination ethernet/modem card like the one 3Com produces, right? We hope to be LD owners by fall.
