Back-up monitor, outside shower February 08, 2003, 12:42:10 pm Yahoo Message Number: 18849What are the thoughts about the current back-up monitor and outside shower options on the new Lazy Daze? We will be full-timing and so parking often. The monitor could be handy if reliable and effective. My concerns about the shower on the 26'RB we've ordered are its location next to the door, tending to create a wet mess right near the entrance, and the potential for freezing in cold weather.Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.
Re: Back-up monitor, outside shower Reply #1 – February 08, 2003, 01:16:32 pm Yahoo Message Number: 18850I have the back up monitor and it is accurate and works well for backing into a tight space but your side mirrors are still your best friends for this job and the camera is only really valuable for things that are directly behind and out of sight from the mirrors. I find the camera of no value while driving. It is not like the rear view mirror in your car and is more of a distraction than value. I keep mine set so it is only on when the transmission is in reverse. It might be of value if you are towing and want to keep an eye periodically on the toad but there are other ways to do this. The screen set in the visor is a really nice set up rather than having a monitor attached to the dash or other place in the cab.All in all, it is probably not worth the $1200 cost. FWIW--If you decide to get one, my driving instructor had me back up to within 4 ft. of a fence and then we put a small sticker on the monitor at the 4 ft mark. This helps with perspective and judging how close you are to an object. Experience may make this unnecessary.

In our RB, the kitchen is between the shower and the door. Barry, I'm sorry. I don't think my message was clear. I'm talking about the optional exterior shower. If I understood Tim at LD, on the RB that is installed just to the rear of the entrance door, in the same location on the outside as the kitchen sink is on the inside. Do you have an exterior shower? Is that where it is located? If so, what is your opinion of the value of that option.Terry
Re: Back-up monitor, outside shower Reply #4 – February 08, 2003, 10:46:30 pm Yahoo Message Number: 18866I have a '99 26.5 RB with an outside shower. It seemed like a good idea, but the location by the door makes it unhandy to use since it would make a puddle in the area near the door, under the awning. I thought it would be nice to wash the dog, rinse off after being at the beach, etc., but we haven't used it yet. It depends on your uses but the cost is not high, so.....Chris Hunter

On our old LD, I installed a nozzle and hose, the type used on kitchen sinks, in the exterior storage compartment in front of the entry door. Freezing was not a problem since I used a quick release hose fitting to uncouple it in cold weather. A shut off valve was mounted in the interior, next to the water pump. The nozzle provided cold water only, which helped to prevent excessive use. We also used it to rinse off our sandals and fishing equipment. To prevent a big, wet mess, we used a couple of Astroturf door mats so we could step into the MH without getting muddy. If needed, you would go directly into the shower, which is a better place to get cleaned up. I have always found showers to be more effective when undressed. We decided against an outdoor shower on the new LD for two reasons. LD wanted to place it on the driver's side, which would require us, after using the shower to walk through the dirt to go inside. There is not a good place to install it on the passenger side on the 23.5' FL. I was also concern that the shower valve assembly would be exposed to freezing when camping in cold conditions. The valve assembly is mounted outside the insulated envelope behind a thin plastic door. There is not enough room to place a thick enough piece of insulation, behind the door, to provide adequate protection against freezing. To properly install a freeze proof the shower would require interior shut off and drain valves. LD showed no interest in doing this when asked. This would be a very difficult retrofit. I would give this some thought. It is something that could probably be deleted if the MH has not been build yet.A nozzle and hose arrangement, similar to our old LD, will be installed in the new LD when time permits.Larry

Re: outside shower Reply #7 – February 10, 2003, 08:34:35 pm Yahoo Message Number: 18922We have a 2001 RB with an outside shower. It's true that we probably use it less because it is right by the door. We have used it to wash off barbeque stuff and mats that were outside. When we were in a lot of red mud at a campsite in Mexico, we used it to wash off our shoes as it was already wet and muddy outside and we could do it from the step without getting back in the mud. So, since it is pretty cheap, I think that it is a good thing. We haven't had any problem with it freezing but we are Californians and spend most of our RVing heading for warm weather. The hose is in the cabinet under the sink and can get caught and crimped by pots and pans or whatever you have stored there.Jonna
Back-up monitor, outside shower Reply #8 – February 09, 2003, 06:38:01 pm Yahoo Message Number: 18882The outside shower is standard on the 30' it is a $200 option on the 26" It would be located outside from the galley sink, with hot and cold. Many improved campgrounds may frown on you running shower water on the ground, but for boondocking, dry camping it might be a life saver. I do a lot of dry camping so I ordered it.Chuck Herbert
