New Onan 4000i
I’ve been informed my new Onan 4000i generator is “in the mail”. Looks like the fuel and exhaust are on opposite ends from the KY. Will let you know how the install goes.

Just an FYI to let you know they are shipping. No, I have not seen it yet.

Is it possible they have different models for curbside or streetside mount?

The QG 4000i has arrived! First one the dealer has ever seen. Install next week.

The Onan 4000i installation is complete. Where do I begin? It was a major learning experience.

1. It is not a simple bolt in conversion from a KY.

2. A new under floor mount is required ($300) and you cannot get the mount from the Onan parts department. My dealer knows a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy that overnighted us one from Elkhart, Indiana. Do not start an install without having a new mount in hand. With cutting, drilling, and welding you could adapt the old one.

3. If your coach calls California home you have to have the EVAP version and install a charcoal canister in a line that has to be added to the fuel tank. As my installing dealer is in California any unit shipped to him must be the EVAP version but we can cap the purge line and not drill a new hole in the fuel tank. My coach calls Arizona home. Don’t want to drill a new hole in the fuel tank.

4. No surprise to us but the installer was surprised to find the original KY under floor mount was both bolted and glued in. You will need both a wrench and a chisel to get it out.

5. The ground lead was attached to the chassis in a different place so the length did not have to be altered. The 12 volt cable had to be shortened. The 120 volt wire and conduit had to be shortened. The fuel line had to be shortened

6. The new exhaust exits near the side of the coach so to not have to cut it we just angled it aft and relocated the exhaust hanger.

It is much quieter inside. Others said it was quieter outside but I was unable to make that judgement. It starts in an instant. Hope it stays that way. It took two days to do the install. With a mount in hand one day would do it. My dealer is in Ridgecrest, California.

There were no instructions or anyone to call about the install.

Thanks Harry, for that write up. I hope I never need to do anything about my generator. In 25 years I'm up to about 133 hours now.  Almost all of that is maintenance runs in the driveway.  Onan should have had this updated version 20 years ago.  Other campers would have appreciated the quieter operation.
I almost went for a Honda 4kw in that form factor, but it was hard to justify that in 1999, since my generator was new and I knew I wouldn't be using it much even then. The Honda (water cooled) was much quieter, but it was discontinued about 2000.
I hope you get a lot of reliable use out of your new generator.    RonB
