constant clicking when AC (cool) mode on??
So AC ran fine all afternoon (in Lake Havasu, 92°) but a while ago, I started hearing a constant clicking sound from rooftop unit.  Still blew cold for a while, now just clicks, no compressor on, just fan.  Dometic Duo Therm Brisk Air, original 2007.
Anyway, no AC now.  Will try to find a mobile tech to look at it tomorrow— plan B will be to get somewhere cooler,  back towards the coast!
 Thanks for any enlightenment 😎

Thanks Jon!
Interestingly, it’s been working normally this afternoon, running 5 hours now, no clicking noise….. weird!
Will be keeping an eye on it & will keep in mind the start capacitor if it acts up again 😁

Maybe it froze over with condensate on the evaporator fins ?  Had that happen 1stvtime I used AC overnight in a TT in LV.

Hah!  It was in Las Vegas on our maiden voyage on a 100 degree day that our start capacitor failed after the AC had been on all day (we were out, the cat was in) on the “auto” setting. That allowed some freezing and it gave up the ghost. Spent the next 5weeks in the broiling Southwest without AC. 😓 Here’s hoping you fare better, Daryl!  — Jon

thanks Joel, I'll keep that in mind about the evaporator fins!

Jon, yikes, 5 weeks without AC!!   I'd read that it's best to keep fan on high (or at least medium) to help keep the freezing up from occurring.   After mine had run all afternoon, once the sun went down I switched fan from high to medium and almost immediately it started the clicking had sounded like it kept wanting to start/stop.  Weird.    Next day I left it alone on high and ran for hours, no problem.   I'd like to have a mobile tech come out to check it out but if it's working fine, I'm not sure what he could do.  Maybe replace start capacitor proactively just in case?    It will warming up again here in Bullhead City tomorrow so will give it a good workout and see how it does!

When you installed the soft start, the starting capacitor was disconnected from the circuit

Are the rooftop A/C controls mounted on a wall or are they mounted on the A/C itself?
If controlled by a wall-mounted control, there is a circuit board in the A/C that may have a relay or something that can click.
You might give Steve B a call, he worked on Jon's A/C controls a few years ago and may be of help.

Hi Larry, Ok , good to know about the capacitor, so that’s ruled out!
Rooftop AC control mounted on the wall, just above the furnace thermostat.   So maybe that circuit board / relay is loose or something?   I’ll contact Steve before a mobile tech comes out, thanks! 😁

Well, after running fine all day since 1:00, again as soon as it started to cool down outside, around 7, the clicking started again and after a few cycles of that, compressor won’t kick back on.
Will call a mobile tech tomorrow, maybe swap out that circuit board?!

Update:
And just like clockwork, at 6:00 AC starting clicking again, so waiting for the inevitable shut down.  So bizarre!
Mobile tech not avail.   Have appt at RV shop next Wed— got to figure this out, then get the heck out of the desert 😁

4/23 Update:
I think my AC/thermostat is possessed and needs an exorcist!
All week, every day, AC runs great, blowing cold cycling on & off normally and holding temp.  But come the bewitching hour, around 6-7:00 the clicking noise starts from the roof unit, sounding like it’s struggling to cycle on/off.  After that, some evenings compressor will kick back on and keep temp (though clicking the whole time) and other evenings, it just won’t turn back on.  No rhyme or reason I can tell.   A couple times if I turn the unit completely off, wait 20-30 mins, the compressor would cycle on.  But more often than not, it won’t so I just leave it off overnight, then turn it back on next day.  Then again it runs fine all day during the heat of the afternoon.
Anyway, appt with RV shop at 9 am tomorrow, so we’ll see what the tech can find, especially since I doubt I’ll be able to replicate the problem during the day…. Finger crossed!
 So weird!!

Hmmm, timing seems odd.  I'd think  1 PM or 9 PM would be more likely for bewitching.
9PM would be midnight in old Salem MA.  1PM would be midnight in Transylvania.  ;)
Good luck with the service center.
