Rear Wheel Skirts
Maybe someone can help us.    When we lost a rear simulator driving, it cracked the tire skirt.   I’ve done a temporary fix to prevent it from getting worse.   At any rate, my question is what is the skirt made of?    Is it molded plastic or is it fiberglass?

As always, thanks in advance.

Hi Ed (Margee);  ABS molded plastic.  (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene).  This is the same material that DWV (Drain Waste Vent) lines like your plumbing is made of. You can buy small cans with an applicator brush. (more a blob than a brush) Weld-On® 773™ ABS - Weld-On  1/4 pint. Purple primer will make a better joint, it softens the material before the actual glue is applied. But the purple color will get everywhere, and it attacks any plastic it touches, so practice elsewhere first.  Some items I looked at to prepare this answer, said that you don't need the primer, but I have some laying around and I've always used it, so I use it.  Pictures are good, how bad is the crack?  Can it be glued from the back?     RonB

I blew an outside rear passenger dual tire and damaged that skirt.  Todd sent me a new one after it happened, including the color match decal stripe, but I patched the tear and still never replaced it yet... Someday.
But after I paid for the replacement shower dome over a year ago, I finally got it from Todd (who is in North Carolina now),  and had it replaced this winter, it's Perfect! Unsurprisingly the old one shattered to bits when being removed.

When repairing skirts, I have had good luck using a plastic epoxy, usually combined with a backing of 1/4" thick ABS sheeting, to reinforce the structurally weak crack repair.
ABS cement is fine too but I would avoid using the primer, it can cause more problems than it cures.
ABS cement and especially the ABS primer can bleed through the crack into the paint and damage it, epoxy doesn't seem to have this problem.

I am so grateful for your help.   If you have a moment, could you describe the steps you used for both items you listed above?

On the back of the wheel cover, sand the surface smooth on the back side of the crack, removing all dirt and debris. Wipe with solvent.  The back of the crack needs a backing strip of ABS plastic sheet to reinforce the repaired crack and prevent it from cracking again.
Cut a strip of the ABS plastic sheet 2" wide by the length of the crack, oversize isn't a problem. Fit it over the length of the crack and devise a way of securing it in place as the glue cures using tape and/or clamps.
If you use ABS cement, be prepared to move fast as the glue sets quickly.
If plastic epoxy is used, you have a few minutes of open time to secure the plastic strip in place before the glue starts setting up.

Hi Ed and Margee;  While wandering around our media files, I found a folder called "Lazy-Daze Fender Skirt Repair"  https://www.lazydazeowners.com/index.php?action=media;sa=album;in=157.  A few pictures of a rear wheel skirt being reinforced on the back with Fiberglas roving and resin. Might be helpful.  RonB
