Lazy Daze Owners group - posts now public (no login required to see)
Hi,
I noticed on my last visit or two that without logging in I could see posts, the recent list that shows just after logging in as well as 3 of the forums.  See attached pics - taken when I was not logged in.

It used to be you needed a login to see what was on the forum.

It is required by the terms of service for the Amazon program.  Any forum that has links posted in it is required to be publicly visible.  A regular user can see things; major bots cannot.

This is just one of the many hoops we have to jump through to be part of the Amazon program that covers the administrative costs of this site.  Hoops that are subject to change at the whim of Amazon and we typically get less than 7-10 days to comply with any changes they make to their rules.

That is beyond scary, it's an invasion of privacy! I found MULTIPLE of my private files on Acrobat Reader! Tell me that no one else can access these files!   >:(  >:(  >:(

"I found MULTIPLE of my private files on Acrobat Reader!"

Can you give us more details? Acrobat Reader is a free Adobe program that lets you open and view PDF files. It's not a website or a location where files are stored, so I'm not clear on how one would find files "on Acrobat Reader." Where exactly were you looking when you found these files?

Hi Steve; The files you see on your computer probably are files you have opened using Acrobat Reader. They remain only on your computer, not quite cookies, but just to save time, if you want to see them again.
There is nothing to prevent our readers, some not members, from copying any file to their own computer. They can then copy these files to anywhere. So be careful out there. RonB

Thank you Jane & Scott.   I didn’t know the information that Michelle described above.  I had always thought the posts were ONLY visible to registered members.   I’m certainly going to be much more careful and thoughtful 🤔 about posting in the future.

Many decades ago when we first got computers and internet access at work, a superintendent advised never to write anything online that you would be uncomfortable explaining to a judge. Words of wisdom.

I see little here to worry about, no one talks about their criminal activities or reveals more than what a quick search would discover.

As far as I know (I might be wrong) any visitor can see anything that has ever been posted. Being a member allows you to post writings. Members can write back.  We've always had a small flux of viewers 'lurking' in the shadows. Some visit just a few times, some join but don't return, or return just a few times and seemingly disappear. Some return later and use slightly different names, or just different names.  Now before some here get too upset;  Look on the internet for your  own info. You'll be surprised at how much is floating in the ether.
I'm very visible with Google. My name, various versions of my name, relatives (often wrong) addresses (also often wrong) phone numbers, cell numbers and other things that are sometimes correct and other things that aren't. I actually try to 'muddy the waters' with erroneous data, but I don't have to try very hard at that. Anybody that has recorded deeds, auto registrations, weddings, deaths, assorted business dealings and other such items has a miasma of personal data available to search engines.  Social Media seems to be the worst spreader of details you might want to keep to a minimum.  That is the interconnected world right now.    RonB

While the Forum is visible to anyone,  when searching for items or issues pertaining to LDs, I have never found a link back to the Forum.
Michelle wrote, "A regular user can see things; major bots cannot."
Is it possible to be open to the public but not scanned by Google, MS Bing, or any of the other search engines?
Doing another quick search on Google and Bing, nothing much shows up except for the deactivated Companion.
How this works is a mystery to me.

"So be careful out there. RonB"

You can count on that, to the point of paranoia!

Yes, I have Adobe Acrobat on my computer and it pops up automatically when I am performing certain actions within my genealogy program, Family Tree Maker. And that is where (Adobe Reader) I found MUTIPLE images of my private files. Although I'm not sure of the connotations it did say "You Only" when I tried to open a file, I presume that I would be required to Log On to Adobe in order to view that file.   :-[   ???

I have shared with my family and friends for years do nothing on the Internet that you don't want published on the front page of the New York Times.  And if you do it's not the end of the world.   Frankly what bothers me the most is Meta and Alphabet don't share with me some of the revenue they earn off my data they acquired off the Internet from me.
