Your photos make it look like it was easy.

Would it be safe to assume that it took a significant amount of time and was not easy to remove?

It sure would! The LD boys evidently worked under the assumption that no one would ever want to remove or modify anything. Those shelves, for example (as one of the guys pointed out in an earlier thread) were screwed from the outside wall. The ones on the shower side were screwed in before the shower enclosure was installed. Reminds me of how they glued down the roof A/C!  :)

Many LD owners assume they can remove things, such as a couch, and plan on reinstalling it when the rig is sold.
Wrong!  Most removed items come out in little pieces and splinters.
This method of construction turns most of the interior construction into a monolithic body where everything adds to the overall structural strength. This is why the coach is so quiet and can suffer a lot of rot without falling apart.

Just curious, what exactly is the purpose of removing the existing shelves?

Purpose? Wait a minute! I need a purpose?  :D  I dunno. I just didn't like them. I really like the Lazy Daze but I don't care for a lot of the decisions they on the inside. Also, to use the kids' jargon from a few years back, that's just they way I roll. On all my rigs, I've ripped, slashed, wired, sanded and bolted. Just can't help myself!  ;D

I’m firmly in the don’t like them either, awkward use of that space, but haven’t come up with what to do in that space instead, so it remains, the wasted space taunting me.

Personally, I get a great deal of use out of the existing media center shelves. But then, we are media users. In fact I have recently replaced the 12 volt Jensen TV with a 32” Samsung Ultra HD TV that easily mounted to the existing TV swing arm.

With our power upgrade, I was able to locate two additional power strips behind our Ultra HD Blu-ray player which easily resides on the lower media shelf. The DVD rack is very convenient while the little cubby to the right holds remotes and a WiFi extender.

The top shelf of the center is a handy space for other media “ ammunition”. I utilize every inch of the center. Of course, I use every inch of the interior and exterior LD storage.

My Father was much like Jor and perhaps more extreme. He owned two Class A rigs and it wasn’t long before he made them a  remodel project. Gutting most of their interiors to suit his needs. Had he tried out his strategies on a LD, he probably would have experienced a bit more resistance to his enthusiasm.

After all is said and done, the rig is yours to do as you please. As for me, with the exception of hidden design changes I made, the Lazy Daze folks have gotten most of their design elements correct. Although a little extra padding in places would have been appreciated in the RB design.

Good luck with all your LD projects and let them be successful ones.

The shelves were up to date when Jor's rig was built, It had space for a satellite receiver, CD player, CD storage, and two cubbies for remotes. The shelves were reinforced to carry the weight of the smaller, heavier TVs of the day.
Today, many MB owners have much larger flat screens installed, making the shelves behind hard to get to, wasted space
The space can still be used for other devices, such as media players, satellite receivers, Starlink modems, etc but it is inefficient use of the space if not being used as originally
After removing the shelves the problem is how to make whatever the replacement is look Factory, if that is your desire. In Jor's case, he has already painted the wall so it will be easier to make the changes blend in

I agree the shelving is a bit limiting but, like Kent, I do use them for media. Also curious as to whether the shelves add any structural strength to the coach?

No structural purpose except maybe giving the shower wall a little rigidity. They are attached on one side to the flimsy shower wall. On the other side they are attached to the cabinet. the heavy cabinet floor piece (3"x3/4") is screwed to the wall and extends along the wall to the shower where it is firmly bolted. Must be blocking in that location. Also, on the upper right of the photos, note the heavy aluminum gusset (one of four on this coach).

OK. Just about done with the SEP (shelf elimination project :) ) when I bought this rig it had the original TV which was heavy and old. I threw it right away and installed a 32" Vizio one of my kids had left here. I never liked it as it was just too big and awkward mounted in front of those shelves. We just stream or watch downloaded stuff so we had no use for the shelves. In addition, for us, there is more than enough storage in the LD so I decided the shelves had to go. Ended up mounting a 27" smart TV which fits just about right. Now, we have full use of the couch below without the shelves looming over us! Just have to do a little paint touch up and we're good to go!

Hi JOR; Thanks for the pictures. Always great. That aluminum gusset better be steel. Part of the 'roll bar' but really a stiffener for the 'house' box. Test it with a magnet. Maybe LD changed the web material.  RonB
