Replacing Original LD Atomic Clock

Our original LD atomic clock finally bit the dust.

The link below is the one we purchased from Amazon. 

$30 bucks and change.  It's a tad smaller than the original, so I did lower the screw that holds the clock about 1/2 inch from it's original location.

This inexpensive atomic clock is much simpler to set and change time zones (a sliding switch on the rear).  Instead of resetting the clock as you pass thru time zones, just slide the switch to the correct time zone.

The exterior sensor for this replacement is slightly larger than the original - it will not fit into the plastic pipe holder on the rear bumper assembly.  I plan to build a sensor replacement holder in 2" pipe sometime in the future, but for the moment it's location changed.

So, I glued a flat magnet to the back of the sensor and placed it in the Propane compartment (recommended by Larry W sometime in the past).

Not familiar with the location of your Propane tank but if it's like mine, drivers side just aft of driver, I experienced temporary false high temperatures during and just after the engine was running. As a result I finally moved it to a compartment away from the engine. Beneath the faux tire cover might be one such place.  :-[

Tony, I had the same problem as you with a replacement sensor being too large to fit in the factory pvc piping under the coach.

I’ve shared this photo before but this was my (temporary) solution since I don’t use the hose storage compartment. Seems like my solution is becoming more permanent as time passes! 

Probably a good idea to wrap it in plastic as you did although I did add some gasket material to the compartment door but dust finds a way in anyways.

Finding that the new upgraded remote sensor would not fit into the PVC pipe LD installed, I located an alternative housing for the remote on Amazon.  Amazon.com: La Crosse Technology 925-1418 Sensor Protection Shield with...

I then attached the new housing to the OEM PVC on our ‘15 RB. Here’s a pic of how I did that. It was a simple task, I like the new clocks color better than the original silver tone, the sensor works perfectly and the new clock displays inside and outside temps accurately.

We attached our sensor with wire to the rear ladder but there are a lot of times that's not accurate.  I like the propane compartment area since on our 98~MB it is the last compartment on passenger side.  We are more concerned with the low temperatures for freezing of the road surface.

If I had any idea that Lacrosse had a remote holder for the sensor, I probably would have purchased it.

I still may do so.  

All of these extra LDOG eyes searching for solutions demonstrate the true value of this forum.

Just a thought.

The only thing that holds my clock sensor to the wooden interior bumper frame are two (2) long screws (drilled through the original pipe holder). See photo.
 
It would be easy to remove the original pipe holder - and then attach the new La Crosse sensor holder which would be attached in the same place.

The install would be much cleaner, and the new sensor holder is larger so it should accommodate the newer sensor units.

There isn't a perfect place for the temperature sensor. Where ever it is located, the indicated temperature is affected by the sun and road heat.

In our 2000 MB I replaced the the original analog clock with the atomic clock. Since there wasn't a out factory receptical for the remote sensor, I installed it in the lower section of the refrigerator with Velcro as a monitor for refer cooling. It worked great! I covered the "Outside" label on the clock with one that indicated "Refrigerator." It was a sure way to check refer temperature without opening the door.

When I bought my Midbath in 2021, the original clock had stopped working.   I’ve been very happy with this replacement!

I replaced the original atomic clock in our 2019 Midbath with the Hodik clock for the ease of time zone changes. I have a great handyman who viewed the larger remote sensor as a plumbing problem. He cut the 1.5 inch PVC pipe and added an adapter to make it a 2 inch pipe.

Yup, I too had a slightly larger sensor that needed to be relocated. I put mine behind the rear wheel cover with 3M velcro
