window removal October 14, 2023, 11:38:41 pm Greetings, just purchased 87 LD 22... two laminated windows cracked... Front over bunk, and fixed half of window behind couch passenger side... Before I make "bonehead mistake" any heads-up on how to remove without damaging... I see few screws inside and assume remove all I can find, then remove the inside frame... but anyone with experience or knows of video posted would be very helpful... Thanks in advance...
Re: window removal Reply #1 – October 15, 2023, 03:22:53 am Hi Bagsworth; Welcome to the club! You'll find a lot of people here with similar problems, some of which have been fixed. An '87 is likely to have quite a few possible things that need fixing. When you do remove the screws inside, there isn't much holding the window in. If it still has the original gray butyl rubber 'goo', it may be all dried up and not sticky enough to retain the window. So have someone ready to catch it! when it falls out. You could put some duct tape on it to hold it in long enough to get outside to catch it. Just yesterday Flamelily came here with a similar problem. She had the dual thermal pane with the insulating space, and one shattered pane. The hard part is finding a similarly tinted pane to match. Your window may be a Hehr brand, and they were bought by Atwood and then Lippert bought Atwood, so hard to find parts. Amazon does sell Hehr (new) windows: Amazon.com : hehr rv windows so there should be places to have them repaired. Re: window removal Reply #2 – October 15, 2023, 10:02:01 am I haven't removed an LD window but I have removed similar windows in another RV. If the window comes out easily as Ron described, that's great. However, if it's still stuck in with the butyl, while a helper is outside with palms on the window, just keep pushing from the inside until it breaks free. May take quite a bit of force but it will come out. Good luck.jor 1 Likes

Exterior sun damage, wife will be re doing the interior to update color scheme, I appreciate the heads up on window replacement... I do see they are laminated safety glass, the butyl is seeping out, likely from heat and sun damage... I am tempted to remove them all and reseal... I will check with local glass shops to hopefully match the tint... Thanks again... JB
Re: window removal Reply #4 – October 22, 2023, 10:44:24 pm Replacing the front window with Lexan is something to consider, broken front windows are common. Some have totally removed the window and covered the opening with sheet aluminum to eliminate future leaks.When removing the front window, check the framing closely, rot in this area (the whole cabover) is extremely common, one of the reasons why the front cap was replaced with a plastic one-piece front cap, without the window, in 1990.The multi-piece front caps have many potential spots that can and do leak, a full resealing of the front cap's seams is suggested, along with all the roof seams.The previous owner of a 1983 LD for eight years.
