wheelchair accessibilty
hello fellow LD enthusiasts!

i posted last week wondering about a yakima decal on the soon-to-be-ours LD (2004 26.5 rear kitchen) and asking if anyone had adapted theirs for wheelchair accessibilty. in the spirit of sharing, in case others have similar constraints, here’s a report on my findings.

we picked up Meadowlark (its new name) a couple days ago- a thrilling experience indeed, and drove it straight to the mobility company (while don followed in the car with a friend). he was aching to get into it but given there was no lift, he could only peek inside. we left there pretty disappointed since they couldn’t come up with any viable solutions. we thought we might have to turn around and resell Meadowlark without even getting acquainted.

luckily, that night i came across a company in ny called access unlimited whose mission is to help wheelchair bound people get into any vehicle. we were so impressed with them, we ended up buying their multi-lift system right away. it’ll have four mounts and make the entire rig accessible without damaging or modifying the structure. it’ll be shipped to an installer here and we should be ready to roll in a few months.

if anyone is in need of such a system, check out the many rave reviews on BBB.org and give them a call. we feel so grateful this company exists!

in the meantime, we plan to give Meadowlark some cosmetic improvements. thinking of reupholstering the couch/beds with pendleton wool fabric for a campy look, sunbrella fabric for the dinette and replacing the carpet between the couches with cork flooring. probably wait on the cab updating for now.

we also could use a back-up camera. if anyone knows of rv remodellers/repair shops they could recommend in the portland oregon or vancouver washington area, please let us know.

happy trails folks! we hope to meet you someday.

Please let us know how this works out, there are others here who might appreciate more information.
Access Unlimited has a wide range of lifts, it will be interesting to see what they come up with.
