Day/night roller shades replacing pleated blinds + we are back!
LD before 2013 had pleated shades.  Has anyone upgraded the pleated shades to day/night roller shades? How difficult was it? What was cost? Is it a do it yourself project?

I just love the roller shades! So cool to just pull down and up it goes, smooth as silk! The day screen is awesome as well.

Thanks for your input.

Ron

PS: we had a LD on order for June but had to cancel due to knee replacement and car accident issues. Things are right now and we are looking for our dream RV again! Life is good!

I talked to Todd about converting the pleaded shades on our 2011 MB, a couple of years ago at the Mothership.  He said there was too much work to be done to make the conversion, so the factory would not do the change.  It's worth a call to them though, because their position on this could have changed.  Given that reply to us, I'm not sure how hard of a DIY project it might be.

If it's a shade, Graber makes it. I think all Costco's have a kiosk where you can make contact with them. They come to you, you select what you want and they return and install it. Hundreds of colors, fabrics, custom lengths, etc. Reasonable cost.

I have no idea what Todd is talking about. Shades are just screwed in.

A RV owner on another Forum mentioned that they had good success with Budget Blinds - Custom Window Coverings .  In their post, they mentioned that a CS person came to their RV, made measurements, and when the shades were ready, came out and installed them.  They also said they were pleased with the shades and the process.  About a year ago, another RVer recommended Blinds | Custom Blinds and Shades Online from SelectBlinds.com with a similar recommendation which is the reason I bookmarked these companies.  I've not contacted either company so I can't add my opinion other than what I've mentioned.  Hope this helps.

I guess I was lucky in that the 31IB was a 2013 model.  On the way home to Sacramento from the mothership (aside grammar question: should mothership be capitalized?), the night shade on one became detached.   Mothership send replacement  unit along with a 'special installation tool'. The 'tool' was a 1/4 " socket that had been tapered such that the end was an almost paper thinness.   This was needed because the space was very tight.   The 'tool' and shade went back home.   Replacement was straightforward, but that may have been because the valence was already installed for the particular shade.   I have no idea of what valences are on other models.

Four years ago, after fighting and repairing the pleated shades, and their broken strings, for twelve years, we replaced with with MCD roller shades, with just the light-proof, nighttime shade.
I measured and ordered the shade online, receiving them in about ten days.
Already having the tinted windows, we saw no need for the daytime, see-thru shades or the doubling of the  price.
Our 1983 LD had roller shade that were still in good condition after 20 years and we wanted to have the same shades.

Installation wasn't too hard but if it's beyond your ability,  I would imagine that a good window shade installer could work in a LD.
I would not buy the MCDs again, the shade material is too fragile, the surface can easily be damaged exposing either the black backing or  poking a small hole through which light enters.  They also show dirt easily and are hard to clean without damaging the thin, colored surface coating.
They were a expensive disappointment.
In retrospect, I should have ordered high-quality, light-proof shades through a local window treatment shop and would have saved some money too..

I have installed other brands of shades, bought by friends in widows shops,  that worked fine too.
It might be to one's advantage to take your rig to a window shop and have them measure the windows, eliminating  problems or responsibility issues with the shade fitment.

Thank you for bookmarking these sites. Very pleased with Budget Blinds. Came to me, quoted no pressure. Done within 3 weeks at 180 a window. Perfect job they did the install.  Your post and bookmarks made it happen for me.
