Firewall gets hot.
Hi group,
This is on my 2005 26.5 mid bath with just over 100,000 miles. Over the past couple of roadtrips, I've begun to notice that the passenger-side firewall, below the dashboard, and next to the doghouse, gets very hot during driving. It's not so bad on cold days -  it actually warms that side of the floor and i can lay my hand on it for a long time. But on warm to hot days, the heat coming off it gets to be where it's quite uncomfortable. In fact, it becomes hot enough to where I can't keep my hand on it for more than about 10 seconds. Not hot enough to burn, but pretty uncomfortable. I've noticed no difference in engine or transmission sounds
My question is, what is behind that part of the firewall in the engine compartment, and should it be getting that hot? The temperature gauge does not show any (or much anyway) change and the oil gauge hasn't moved.

I have resorted to putting a bit of foam insulation over the exposed part of the firewall to cut the heat, but I am a bit concerned about it.

Hi David;  My experience with this is that the dog-house cover was removed (sometimes by smog check people) and not replaced properly.  This leaves a small gap. Right behind this is the exhuast mnifold, Very hot!   You may also have broken manifold bolts allowing exhaust gasses to escape right there.  I've heard also that rodents may have chewed away some of the foil or underlying soft fiberglass insulation, allowing the heat to penetrate more.  You should remove the dog-house cover and take a look.  Hope this helps.   RonB

Thanks Ron. This does help in that the dog house has been removed and replaced many times and once I did discover it was not replaced properly. For reasons I have never discovered, I could not budge it to reposition. I removed the bolts and unsnapped the catches, but could barely budge it. At that point there was much hot air coming from the space. After a visit to my mechanic, it seems it is properly placed, but the firewall still gets hot.

This is a little different because the doghouse does seem well seated. All the heat is radiating from the firewall. I will be having some servicing on the rig done soon so I will have this looked at more carefully. I really wanted to see if this was an indication of something that needed immediate action. So thanks again!

Good chance the firewall insulation has been removed for a rodent’s nest. It’s a common problem.

I was hit by rodents also. I then mounted a light in the engine compartment which seems to have kept them away so far.
