Adios Microwave April 29, 2023, 04:48:28 pm Took out the microwave in favor of a plywood shelf. We hardly ever use it. Did the same in a previous rig. I'm keepin' the microwave for the next guy.jor
Re: Adios Microwave Reply #1 – April 30, 2023, 10:23:43 am As using the microwave always required hookups or starting the generator, and dry camping has been our usual style, we got out of the habit of using the nuker as other than a breadbox. At home, though, we use it a lot for a quick warmup of something or other, and the occasional microwavable food item. So once circumstance allowed installing a 2200W inverter, we ended up using the microwave as intended, and a few seconds to a few minutes run is easily and quickly recoverable with solar to the LFP batteries. It remains, however, still our breadbox too...Steve
Re: Adios Microwave Reply #2 – April 30, 2023, 11:42:51 am Yes, having an always on inverter makes the microwave far more useful.I was contemplating doing exactly what jor did until my solar upgrade that included a three thousand watt inverter, as I was never a fan of cranking up the generator just to nuke something, though it’s still occasionally storage when driving. 1 Likes
Re: Adios Microwave Reply #3 – April 30, 2023, 01:01:41 pm Like Steve, our LD's "bread box" can also be used to heat things up with the inverter. Our previous 1983 LD had the microwave removed since it lacked a generator and the fact that 20+ years ago lithium batteries did not exist and inverters cost big bucks. So much has changed. When we ordered our 2003 LD, I asked Steve if he could provide a custom door that would fit the microwave cabinet and the answer was no. Re: Adios Microwave Reply #6 – May 01, 2023, 12:13:48 pm Our Microwave is gone for over Two years now, don't miss it. We did a remod in the bathroom and in the kitchenwhen we pulled the Mwave. We rebuilt the doors from the bathroom to fit the hole created by the gone Mwave andadditional cabinet where the pad was. Then we built new style doors for the bathroom. I'm thinkin' your carpentry skills are on a much higher level than mine which don't go much beyond a circular saw and a hunk of wood! I'm gonna think it over nevertheless. Great job. jor
Re: Adios Microwave Reply #9 – May 20, 2023, 07:16:03 pm Following up on the goodbye microwave. I decided to use a whiteboard with magnets in place of a regular door. We're leaving in a couple of days so we'll get a chance to see how it goes. Might end up putting some kind of door on it one of these days but a person can never have too many white boards so it's likely to stay.jor 3 Likes

He was not interested, but I wonder if anyone has done this?I would be definitely interested in trying to replace our original micro (although it still looks and acts brand new). Never cooked with a convection micro but assume it would be easier for us to quickly cook some chicken nuggets etc. for the kiddos without adding a bunch of heat to the coach. I did a few minutes of reading posts (here or somewhere else, I forget), and that *very* limited research seemed to suggest convention micros need to vent heat out as well — I assumed that meant external venting if I wanted to avoid the same coach-heating problem as the gas oven (maybe right, maybe wrong) and that may be complicated for our RB. Not sure. I might try instead something like that $20 DASH small toaster oven Andy mentioned in another thread. I’ve got more research to do before making an informed decision. We haven’t yet even used the regular gas oven in ours yet (it hasn’t been lit since our RV tech inspected it) but I do think we would have used a convection micro to bake nuggets or something if we had one. Not sure. All microwaves vent out heat - in the case of RV-specific models, heat that goes into the cavity behind the unit vents out the front through the mounting baffles. Convection models probably will utilize this method as well. Since the convection mode utilizes a heating element and not microwaves, it won't lessen your heat load any more than a toaster oven or the oven below your stove, and the interior room is less than in a pure microwave of similar dimensions.Steve 1 Likes
Re: Adios Microwave Reply #15 – May 21, 2023, 01:35:34 pm "Convection models probably will utilize this method as well."Yes, the Contoure convection/microwave oven that came with my current Airstream had vents in its mounting surround, very similar to what I had in my Lazy Daze's microwave oven. No external venting--just those vents to the rig's interior.

And thanks Steve, Andy and Jor.....Yes, that's what I figured. Since they run longer, as would be expected, when in convention-baking mode, I'd need to find a way to externally vent if I wanted to avoid heating the coach like an oven would. Or go simpler, and just carry a toaster oven if we didn't want to fuss with the lighting the gas oven.
Re: Adios Microwave Reply #18 – May 22, 2023, 11:47:42 am Hi, Not much 'fuss' lighting the pilot for the oven. You only need to do it once per camping trip. Don't turn the oven knob to 'Off' just return it to 'pilot'. It uses very little gas in idle. Moving a toaster oven around is a lot more work. RonB

Not real comfortable leaving it in pilot-only mode for any length. I know it is supposed shut off if the flame goes out, but I have at least one report that the pilot can be lit without pushing in the knob - maybe a fluke, but in our '83 we on occasion would smell propane faintly when left in pilot-only.I installed an electronic ignitor for all burners, including one tip I mounted by the oven pilot. Simply hold down the ignitor button until we see the reflection of the flame on the bottom of the oven, then it is ready to go.Steve 2 Likes
Re: Adios Microwave Reply #20 – May 22, 2023, 01:12:33 pm Hi Steve; The oven pilot flame won't allow the gas for the main burner to flow if the pilot is out, but the gas to the pilot is always on. Lifting the burner grate plate, there is a screw on the oven control, and the amount of gas for the pilot itself can be adjusted to a very low level. It's warm, so flows out the ceiling. If it goes out, you've got a good nose! Mine has never gone out, but now with the microwave/LiF, the oven stores cat food. RonB

Ron, this is then likely why we would notice the smell when we left it on 'pilot-only in our '83. In our '04, you must push in on the knob to get the pilot to light, so they must have made a change. In an '03 I know the pilot gas would flow without pushing, so perhaps this is when it changed.Steve
