Oil Change
Oil changes are usually pretty straightforward. Not this one though. I picked up the oil and air filters at O'Reilly's. I asked the attendant if the drain plug required a crush washer. He advised me that the drain bolt and washer are a unit and you must replace the unit rather than just buying a new washer at each oil change. Never heard of that. Just four bucks so no prob.

Anyhow, off to the house to get the job done. Under the rig with an oil filter tool (the plastic kind that slips over the end of the filter and connects to a 3/8" drive ratchet. Wouldn't budge. I struggled with that darn filter for awhile and finally got it off with a steel filter tool and a breaker bar. Must have been a new guy that cranked that thing down at the last oil change.

OK, oil's done; time for the air. I removed the air filter and looked at the one I bought at O'Reilly's. No go. Back to O'Reilly's. All the filters in the computer for an 08 Triton V10 are the flat box type. He was about to give up when the guy at the next register says. "Hey, that's a 46418, same as my truck." God bless that guy. Back to house with my shiny new air filter.

Anyhow, I managed to turn a 20 minute job into a couple of hours. Par for the course!!!

The first 90% of the project takes the first 90% of the resources.  The rest of the project takes the other 90%.    ;)
At least it wasn't 40 miles to O'Reilly's. Glad it's done.  :)

This story is exactly why I won’t change the oil myself on the road, as I don’t have an extra vehicle when I forget something or get the wrong part.

I do have a Fumoto ready to install though.

Now that's a great idea, I actually installed a Fumoto on my last rig as it was common on that engine for the drain plugs to strip the pan. Thanks for reminding me. I think I'll pick one up for the LD. It's the little things...

Hi JOR;  I haven't changed the original gasket yet. I do have a few on hand just in case it starts leaking.
Rock Auto works for me.   My '99 has a copper gasket:    1999 FORD E-350 6.8L V10 Oil Drain Plug Gasket | RockAuto   but can also use the flat plastic washer,      2016 FORD E-450 6.8L V10 Oil Drain Plug Gasket | RockAuto           RonB

I just changed my oil yesterday getting to use my previously install Fumoto valve...wow that was easy! I put one on my other car too!

Last June I bought 2 Fumoto oil drain valves based on all the positive responses in this thread.  One valve was for my Jeep Cherokee toad and the other for my 2021 MB LD.  I changed the Jeeps oil shortly after receiving the valve and it easily installed without any problem.  Last week I changed the oil in the LD and discovered that the Fumoto valve listed for Ford 2021 E-450 7.3 V8 didn’t fit.  The threaded end of the valve was larger than the threaded drain hole in the oil pan.

My first mistake was to try and call the Fumoto customer service number listed on their website.  It took me 3 attempts leaving my name and phone number to realize that they’re not going to call me back.  I then used the websites email form to give my contact info and description of the problem.  To my surprise, they were very responsive, getting back to me within an a couple of hours.  The customer service rep apologized for any inconvenience and offered to ship me the correct size valve and a prepaid shipping label to return the oversized valve.

So here’s the crux of the problem… it seems that Ford uses 2 different drain plug sizes on the 7.3L V8.  The valve listed on the Fumoto website for my LD is a F106SX which has a M14-1.5 thread.  However in my case, the correct valve is a F107SX which has a M12-1.75 thread.  There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason as to which size drain plug Ford uses on the 2021 7.3L V8.  It probably has something to do with being the first production year for that engine.

I did discover one clue as to which oil drain plug you may have.  Ford says to use a 17mm wrench to remove the drain plug which appears to be the standard M14-1.5 thread.  But my non-standard oil drain plug (M12-1.75 thread) uses a 1/2 inch wrench to remove the plug.

Anyway, I hope this helps if you are looking to replace your oil drain plug with a Fumoto valve.
