Antigravity Jumper XP-10

Simply Shocking!

Today I had a need for my XP-10 Antigravity Micro-Start lithium jumper battery. I store it in the upper cabinet (sunward side of the rig) of my RB. It has always served me well when needed. I expected the same results today.

I was shocked to find the battery pack had swollen to the point of splitting open it’s casing (pics included). It had been sitting idle in its zippered pouch for a while and had been charged satisfactorily before storage.

It has been months since I had successfully used it. I believe the excessive heat we’ve experienced recently was the cause of the XP-10 failure. I will store the next lithium jumper set on the shaded side of the rig in an outside storage bay.

Warranty for this product is for one year. I’ve had it for about three. So replacement will not be included, consequently I checked the Amazon price and found that the cost had risen to $180 from my original cost of $125. With this in mind, I purchased the DB Power jumper for a discounted price of $72.00.  Amazon.com: DBPOWER 800A Peak 18000mAh Portable Car Jump Starter (up to 7.2L...

I had the DB Power prior to the Antigravity unit. The DB Power unit was able to start the LD, however the XP-10 had more cranking power so I purchased it and gave my DW the DB Power. Now we will each have identical jumpers.

NOCO has very good reviews and might be worth consideration:

I had dealings with two Anti Gravity jump starters. First one wouldn't take a charge about a year old so they replaced it with a new up graded model, little over a year it wouldn't take a charge. I called them up and their response was too bad. I have purchased my very last Anti gravity product. I fell back onto my old reliable jump starter.

I've had NOCO for several years and had to use it a couple times - works great.

Safety First.
The Green house effect of cars and RV's will raise the temperature to the point a lithium Ion battery start a runaway reaction.  Hence the swelling of the battery pack and splitting of the case.
I had a small solar charging lithium ion pack overheat and swell in one afternoon while charging in my windshield.
I place my lithium jump started under the drivers seat where I expect the Green House Temperatures to be cooler and I can chuck it out the window,  quickly, if I detect problems.
I had similar problems with Lithium Ion packs when I used them to fly electric RC Airplanes. including over charging and over discharging issues.

The same thing happened to our Jeep's XP-10 a few months ago, I found it cracked and dead. A smaller Antrigravity, stored in my wife's car died the same death last year.
I replaced the Jeep's booster with a NOCO.
The Antigravity boosters are a big disappointment, they were(are) Consumer's Report top-rated booster.

Ditto with the AntiGravity. I was all set to score points with my neighbors by helping them start their dead vehicle. Nada. Despite its lights showing full charge, there was nothing.  Attempts to recharge were futile. A brick.  — Jon

Larry,

Antigravity failures are shameful. My original purchase of the BDPower is still operating. My purchase was based upon my use of one while in Yosemite when my Chassis battery was drained (my error).

Currently, I am concerned about any lithium jumper failing similarly to my Antigravity unit. Is there some type of container that can protect the LD if a similar failure occurs with another lithium jumper? I wonder about the odds of a reoccurrence and a dramatic failure such as a fire.

It would be a shame to return to the rig and find it burned to the ground due to such a failure.

Kent, I also purchased a DBPower jumpstarter about a 1 1/2 years ago. It’s been residing in the LD since purchase with no issues (don’t think I’ve had to use it yet).

Sure. Try a search for "lithium battery storage bag". Now if they'd only make one big enough for a Tesla... ;-)

Hi Gregg,

I purchased a new DBPOWER 800 amp jumper from Amazon yesterday. It arrived this afternoon.

While checking the details of the unit (looks just like yours, except it did not come with the wall plug), Amazon popped up with a more powerful unit. The DBPOWER 2500 peak amp 21800 mAmp jumper rated for 8.0L gasoline engines. Amazon.com: DBPOWER Car Battery Jump Starter 2500A 21800mAh - for up to 8.0L...

My daughter will be gifted the new 800 amp unit for Christmas. It will work perfectly for her 6 cylinder car.

As my Grandmother used to always say, “ Great minds think alike”.

I recently took a look on Amazon for a fireproof/explosion proof storage bag for my lithium jumper.

They have several options to choose from. They all seem very similar to one another. In an effort to determine if any of these options could live up to their claims, I located a YouTube video that put one such device to the test.

The test goes to great lengths to test such bag’s efficacy. Possibly to the extreme, you can be the judge. https://youtu.be/CXXBDq8vp2A

Like many of us, I have other lithium storage devices in our rig. Flashlights, BattleBorns etc. I’m not particularly concerned about possible Thermal Runaway from these devices.

The video does warn of such storage devices mistreatment. So with that, it’s a good idea, I suppose, to take care and heed the advice presented.

Still looking for a good storage bag and place to put any such device.

Just a thought.

Kent, store your lithium batteries in one of these.  Guaranteed to do the job and no one will mess with it, I'm betting!

Thanks for posting that, Kent! That video is a real eye-opener, and packed with solid information as well.

One comment: I believe that all the batteries involved in that video were lithium polymer types. My understanding is that the lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries* that an increasing number of RVers are using as house batteries are much less susceptible to fires. I don't understand the details, but that's what I've read in a number of places. Not only is the LiFePO4 chemistry less likely to fail catastrophically, but these batteries' Battery Management Systems (BMSs) are specifically designed to prevent overcharging, over-discharging, and use at extreme temperatures. That doesn't mean that they are invulnerable in case of, say, a dead short across the terminals or severe physical damage in a crash, but overall fire is reportedly less of a concern.

* for example, Battle Born, Victron or Lithionics products

So if lithium polymer batteries are less safe, why are they so widely used in everything from cell phones to laptops to skateboards to electric vehicles? As I understand it, it's because they offer higher energy density--more amp-hours per ounce--than LiFePO4 batteries. Obviously when you want maximum battery life in the slimmest possible phone, or maximum range in an electric car, that's crucial. For house batteries, not so much--especially since in that case you're looking at replacing lead-acid house batteries, and compared to those, even LiFePO4 is a huge saving in weight.
