Chrome wheel simulators - think I messed up using chrome polish
Was shining up the hubcaps (wheel simulators) and left the chrome polish on for a bit thinking it wouldn’t harm the covers. Well I was wrong and there are permanent streaks I can’t get off. I know these are just chrome plated but didn’t expect this to happen! Any resource for replacements should I decide my OCD gets the best of me?

What kind of polish are you using? The cover looks as if acid was used instead of a fine abrasive, I have never seen any car care product do this, chrome is tuff stuff.
The Mothership should either have replacements or know where to buy them.

Joe-

Try using vinegar - Place a rag soaked with vinegar on the hubcaps, let it sit for 20 minutes, and then try to rub it off.

It may need more than one treatment.

Joe,

The Mothership mailed one directly to me. Less than $100.00 Needed one for my front left after I crushed it on a curb in Watchman CG.

Supply issues were no problem at the time. I checked Amazon etc. and Ford. Ford didn’t know anything. I choose LD because they would be able to provide the OEM quality I preferred.

Just be aware that the new cover will require a rubber mallet and patience to get it on the first time since the clips are very strong and will fight you.

I was using Mothers spray on Chrome polish. Just sprayed it on and let it sit for about 10 minutes prior to polishing thinking it wouldn't harm anything while I worked on other areas of the rig. Was very surprised as well!

Thanks for the heads up on the Mothership. I figured that would be the best source. I want to be sure the center decals match...almost thinking I should get a full set of four to match. I know some years have one singular lug nut that comes off while the other lugs are just decorative. Is this the case with the 2008's or does it just pry off like a normal cover? Thanks again all! Let this be a lesson to all. I'll also be trying the vinegar trick.

Hi Joe;  I don't know what year they switched to the press on type of cover, but there are two real nuts holding the older covers on. At 180 degrees apart, there is a small mark (a crimp mark) to denote the real nuts.  The other six nuts are just covers for the studs underneath.
As far as I know there is no chrome on the covers. They are electro-polished stainless steel.  And those marks from the spray on product should be removable with a wax polishing (fine abrasive particles) compound.
I just use Aero Products Wash/Wax All, or any wash and wax stuff I have around.   RonB

I think the press-on wheel covers were used starting with 2007 models. If replacements are needed, or any other wheel "simulator" parts, this is the company website:

KII WHEEL SIMULATORS

Good customer service and phone response.

Might these drip marks be from a blown axle seal? Or maybe some petroleum distillate containing "dressing" used on the tires?

Maybe 2008? Our TK has the bolt-on covers. Chassis date 2/14/07, Build completion date 8/1/07, Registered date 8/16/07.
