Gas Tapper
Since I anticipate making few, if any, trips this year, I wanted to have a way to keep the fuel fresh in the LD gas tank without racking up unnecessary mileage.  Just ordered this product to accommodate recycling the fuel for use in other vehicles:

 GasTapper R-Max – FlowJoe

I'll post an update after I receive and use it.

I'd just use Sta-bil personally. That seems like a lot of work to syphon gas.

Joe, I do plan to use Stabil also. I will probably drive and recycle the gas every 3 months or so.

There is a anti-siphon device in the fuel neck. You can’t get a hose into the tank from the fuel door. I have drained out 75% using the generator fuel line. If you want the last 25% something else will have to be done. There is a split connect point on my fuel fill neck halfway I might try to crack open to bypass the screen in the fuel neck.

I spend six months on the road with my LD, and six months home in Alaska. The LD tows a car, and like every good Alaskan I also have 4WD truck and a Subaru.  That means two vehicles in storage up north every winter, and two in Arizona every summer. Every stored vehicle gets Sta bil and the battery disconnected, regardless of the weather. And every one starts when I get there to use it.  Unfortunately batteries these days aren't as good anymore, but that's another topic... except that I thought they'd be getting better instead of worse.

Wasn’t aware of that. I’ll let ya’ll know how it goes once I test the unit.

I’m not sure on how to add pictures although I bypassed the anti-syphon device between the rear tires and leaf springs. There was a split connection there possibly from a previous owner and I could get all the gas out without using the drain plug and making a mess.

It's noteworthy that the product description for the $179 Gas Tapper R-Max kit that HiLola ordered says this: "If vehicle access is desired [obviously it would be!], please order our Car Access Kit to test your vehicle first." The implication is that it's not necessarily possible to siphon gas from every vehicle, even with the car access kit. For example, if there were a screen in the filler neck, no hose would be able to get past that.

The R-Max kit does include the access kit, which consists of a small funnel, a hose, and a smaller hose. Presumably the funnel is supposed to hold open any spring-loaded trap door, while the hoses hopefully slither past whatever anti-siphoning barriers are located further down the vehicle's filler neck. This blog post has some tips on how to do that.

Assuming it's possible to sneak past the anti-siphoning barrier, the job could be done with a simple old-fashioned tube-and-bulb fuel siphon. GasTapper even sells a fancy version, although more basic ones can be had for as little as ten or twelve bucks. It wouldn't be as fast as the electric pump in the R-Max kit, but for a tenth the price, one might be willing to take a little longer. :-)

So I just looked with a 1/4” inspection camera and there is a black plastic looking grate in the fuel neck. I couldn’t get the 1/4” inspection camera through the grate. If you could get a hose smaller than a 1/4” outside diameter( inside would be much less and possibly too flimsy to make all the bends to get to the tank) it might fit although then it would only drain like 3-4 gallons a hour or so. I have pictures to show if I can upload also.

Received the Gas Tapper product which I will test on the LD when time allows.  I noticed on the company website that there is a search feature to see if your vehicle can use the product successfully. It's not a complete list and is updated on an ongoing basis so if your vehicle doesn't appear on the list, it may just mean that it hasn't been tested yet:

Car Siphon Testing List – FlowJoe

I'll follow up when I've tested all my vehicles (may be awhile).

I have received the Gas Tapper Car Access (Test) Kit; it contains both a 1/4" and 1/2" (not 3/4" as per their website) OD tube. I too will test my vehicles but not this weekend.

Thanks for the info, 1999ISLANDBED, HILOLA, and Charles--and thanks for updates to come! Be sure to share your findings with FlowJoe/Gastapper (email support@gentap.com) so they can add to their compatibility list.

I was wondering when somebody would shove a borescope down there. By all means upload your photos, 1999ISLANDBED. Just click the gray REPLY button and then drag and drop images into the area indicated. I've found that limiting width to 1,000 pixels or so works best.

If the Gas Tapper fails, fuel can be pulled from or pumped into the fuel tank through the generator fuel line, down to the 1/4 tank level. It wouldn't be too difficult to permanently mount a small electric fuel pump near the generator.
Might be a good project for off-roaders who need to refuel their toys without carrying several fuel cans.

When working with gasoline, use only fuel line and other parts compatible with gas.
Be careful when wiring the pump, to eliminate any possible sparking near the pump or fuel lines from switches or plugs.

My 26.5 island bed lazydaze has a split connector between the fuel tank and leaf springs. I was able to bypass the grate in the fuel neck to get the remaining  25% fuel level.

A little closer up of the grate in the fuel neck and you can see a smaller hole behind the grate also. Not sure what that is.

The idea of using a borescope in the fuel neck is a good one which I hadn't thought of!  Remembering that I just purchased one last summer, I'll try it first before attempting to siphon.

How far in was the grate?

Just checked my fuel tube with the borescope. There is some sort of anti-siphoning device about 2 1/2 feet into the tube although mine doesn’t look like a grate. Not sure what it is, but it means the Gas Tapper product isn’t going to work on the LD so I will probably return it.  Glad I was able to check it first with the borescope because once the Gas Tapper touches fuel,  it’s no longer returnable according to the manufacturer.

I guess it means a trip under the rig to look at the generator fuel line.
