BATWING TV ANTENNA WORM DRIVE GEAR REPLACEMENT

After 18 years of faithful service, our 2004MB 's Winegard batwing antenna refused to rise when I crank the handle, it just generated a series of clunk noise. I then climbed to the roof top, opened the hex nut cover to see what happen to the drive mechanism. After slowly turning the worm drive counterclockwise to remove it from the gear house, I found the gear tooth was worn out. I thus ordered one replacement from Amazon to replace it. What surprise to me was the new worm gear is much longer than the one installed by Mothership, I had to cut it to the length to fit. It was a pretty easy exercise. We use our batwing antenna almost all the time except while driving so that could be the reason the gear work out. I did not see any other posting on this subject so I shared my lessons learned here.

Don't forget to lube the new one once in a while. I use silicon spray.
