Toilet maintenance- greasing the ring

Evidently the type of toilet in my LD needs to have the ring greased from time to time to keep the seal in good shape. I didn’t know. It makes sense since it’s a rubber ring. I’m sure most of you out there are saying “of course you need to do that”, but I just found out. So with a small tin of plumbers grease, I’ve started putting on a thin layer after I clean the toilet.
Are there any other toilet maintenance activities I need to know about?

Thanks for the suggestion. I replaced the seal several months ago and to my surprise it’s leaking again. I’ll give it a try.

I personally don’t care for this stuff. I saw it used by the You Tubers “Changing Lanes” so I tried it. Found it created a little stickiness around the edge of bowl just above the ball valve. Then the bowl periodically emptied every couple of days. I finally just cleaned everything up and no further problems. Just saying.

I don't suppose the lubrication will hurt but in 16 years I've never once used such a product.
I have a toilet brush which is a tight fit in the dump opening which is surrounded by the rubber seal. I push on the foot pedal, insert the brush head half way and rotate it back and forth while the water is running. That keeps any crud off the seal ring. And that's it!

Another thing, I try not to let the dump valve get dry, always allowing enough water to cover it after a flush.

I'm with Lazy Bones: every time I flush solids, I do a quick (less than two seconds) brushing. That seems to do a good job of keeping the seal clean and holding water.

I’m with Lazy Bones and Andy….use a brush and water…sometimes some white vinegar….

Get my family to brush after using the throne…that’s laughable! Your family is much more cooperative than mine. I’ve started using the grease each time we clean after a trip and it’s been working for us. I use a little bit on the bottom side of the rubber to keep the rubber conditioned so it keeps a nice seal. We haven’t had any stickiness or mess from it. If this can prolong the life of my ring, I’m willing to try it out. 💜

The LD owners manual, on newer rigs anyway, calls for application of Pledge to the rubber ring. I wipe the ring with pledge after dumping. I notice the valve closing more swiftly, almost a snap close, after lubricating this way.

I travel solo, so I don't have that problem. But I understand. A little grease can't hurt .:-)

I just make sure water or antifreeze is always in the bowl...have used olive oil or other oil to lube it...let it sit in bowl overnight and of course make sure it is clean.
