Ignition Coil Installation As Preventative Maintenance
Hi folks,

After Harold’s recent ignition coil failure and the low mileage of his 2014 LD is taken into consideration, I wonder if replacement of all coils on a mileage based calendar would be advisable.

I ordered 3 Denso coils on RockAuto yesterday. About $25 each. R & R of the coils would be costly at my mechanic (?$) but if I replace my tires every 5-6 years I wonder if this PM would be a cost effective strategy.

I purchased our LD New because I didn’t want my wife to suffer roadside emergency repairs. The rig has about 27,000 miles now and wonder when doing such a PM would be advisable. 40,000...45,000 miles? I hate breakdowns. I like Preventative Maintenance.

Any thought? Thanks

As I advised yesterday, it's higher mileage rigs that suffer from coil breakdown. I would wait until the 75-80K range and carry spare coils for you or a mechanic to change if needed. If you have reasonable mechanical skills, it isn't a hard job once the doghouse is off. The challenge is determining which coil is bad, requiring a scanner to read the code and determine which coil the computer is indicating is bad.
You will need a 7mm socket and 1/4"-drive ratchet.

I would not expect a bad coil to disable the motorhome. Can the vehicle be driven safely to a mechanic?

If you remove the doghouse and disconnect the fuel injector to prevent the raw fuel from washing away the cylinder's lubrication yes, it can be driven...but you will not want to drive it far, it makes an extremely loud popping noise that gets louder and more frequent as the engine speeds up.

The Blownsparkplug guys used to sell a plug that could be used for driving longer distances that eliminated the noise, it may still be available.
This is only an issue on pre-2004 LDs, with the four-thread spark plug hole heads. Ford switched to the seven-thread head late in the 2003 E450 model year production run.
For early V10 owners, the four-thread heads can be converted to seven-thread heads by installing inserts. It isn't cheap, in return the potential spark plug blowing out issue is eliminated.
