Intermittent fuel issues request in Colorado
Top of the morning folks. I was wondering is anyone has a line on someone who may be able to take a peak at our ‘83 Lazy Daze 22’ out near the Front Range area in Colorado. We’re traveling from Oregon and have had some issues with the fuel system and we would love to get addressed before heading back over the Great Divide. Thank you kindly for your references. — feeling hopeful in Black Hawk, Colorado.

"...have had some issues with the fuel system..."

And specifically, what are those issues? We can't help if you don't talk!  :(

You need to find an older mechanic who is familiar with carburetors and old school fuel pumps, many younger mechanics have little to no experience with them. So what’s the problem?

For what it's worth, I had a good experience a few years ago with Town & Country Ford in Alamosa, CO. My rig had been struck but lightning and had to be towed there. I thought I had a fried engine computer, which would have been a $600+ repair. Instead, it turned out to be a fusible link, which they diagnosed and replaced for a hundred bucks even, plus $21.38 for an oil and filter change and tightening up my emergency brake. And they let me stay in their parking lot for two nights.

Thanks all! It appears to be some sort of intermittent starvation of fuel. Maybe pump going out, fuel filter clogged, vapor lock or carburetor issue possibly. It had a new Edelbrock carburetor not to long ago on this underpowered old small block Chevy. 1,330 miles and I fell 100’ short up in Blackhawk. Still running, just as expected in high elevation and short on ponies.

"Maybe pump going out..."

Quite possible given the age of the rig, and presuming it's the original.

My experience with three pump failures was hesitation, rough running, hiccups, etc. prior to full on failure.

One thing about old school, it is easier to work on. I'd do a fuel filter first, is it hot out, you might be experiencing vapor lock. Does it start up after it has a chance to cool down? Is it an electric pump in line from the tank to the carb, or engine mounted? I had an Edelbrock on our old Tioga 440. I had to make a heat shield to isolate it from the intake otherwise it would boil the fuel in the carb.

The OP’s rig has a carburetor and a low pressure fuel pump, mounted on the engine.
Our V10s are all fuel injected and have a high pressure pump located inside the fuel tank.

I would have the fuel pressure and flow rated measure to see if it is within Factory specs.
