Awning tear repair
My awning was torn during some gusty winds, it appears to be separating & a 3" tear near the outer most part of the awning started.  Looking for recommendations for best repair kits/materials. Not sure of the fabric the awning is made of? If photos are helpful - I'll snap a few to post. thanks in advance!

Your 20-year-old awning fabric is getting old and may be weakening from age and exposure. The awning's leading edge is under a lot of stress when the wind blows, tearing at this point is common.
Wish I had a repair method, our 2003 LD's awning fabric has a small tear on the edge too.
Replacement is the common repair, it's an involved job to replace.

Thanks - that's what I was afraid of. Was hoping for a temporary fix with glue/tape to make sure it doesn't undergo further damage   :)

At the least I’d try the following as a somewhat temporary fix.  First I’d clean both sides of the tear and use nylon thread to stitch the tear.  Then I’d cost both sides with a thin coat of epoxy.  Finally I’d cover the epoxy with Eternabond tape.   At the least I’d tell myself it’s a better solution than leaving the awning with a tear.  My .02 anyway.

Hi Christine;  Like Larry said age related weakening of the fabric.  I have a roll of duct tape that would work well here. It is actually for HVAC duct work. It's a thin shiny silver Mylar material. A strip the entire length, on top of the awning would be not vey visible and protect the material from sun damage. It is meant for high temperatures.   Silver Film Mylar Duct Tape 181 2 in. x 120 yd. - Indoor Comfort Supply   It meets the standard for 181A.  Regular duck tape would fall apart, don't use that. The black printing on this silver tape may be removable. I'd try acetone.
The fabric is either acrylic or vinyl. Fiamma and other places offer replacements.  I would just try the tape for now.  RonB

edit:  I may try a strip of that to protect from sun damage and as a reinforcement on my 23 year old awning. I've got plenty of tape. ps: clean it well first where the tape goes.

Does anybody have a comment on the clear awning tape that I’ve seen around? I wanted to use that stuff on the cracks on my endcaps and for the awning on my ‘01 RK that I haven’t had the guts to tackle yet as other projects are holding me up.

I've used the camco rv awning tape (Amazon.com: Camco 42613 3" x 15' Awning Repair Tape : Everything Else) on mine when the wind teared up the edges on the corners. It seemed to me at first like it would not last well and come off on the first rain, but surprisingly it has held up for about 6 months now!

I highly recommend cleaning the area where the tape will go very well, and then tape up with lots of reinforcement. Also just like I did, tape up the other side even if it isn't torn just to make sure it doesn't.

We, too, have been thinking about tape for covering end caps that are cracking. I’m held back by the fine print on the packaging that cautions that it might yellow over time, or that it is not designed for easy removal and might damage the surface if attempted. Anyone have a tape without these drawbacks? — Jon
