Re: What Are You Reading? Reply #125 – January 12, 2021, 12:21:01 pm I just finished a good read “Nerves of Steel”, an autobiography of female aviator Tammie Jo Shults. Her story begins with her childhood but then moves to her Naval career and how she combats the Navy’s good-ol-boy network. All the while becoming one of the first female F/A 18 Hornet pilots. For me, it was an eye opener that the attitude of some men still resent female pilots even in the commercial airlines. Her story cumulates with a catastrophic engine failure and rapid cabin decompression at altitude of the Boeing 737 she is piloting. (sorry no spoiler, you’ll have to read the book to see how it turns out) This book is a great read for any young woman but I found her story so engrossing that I couldn’t put it down.- John 3 Likes

Well, that's a mouthful.Geoffrey West is a scientist singularity. I tried to summarize his interests and accomplishments, but deleted every attempt. Given a set of details, what model or models describe the data. That’s Mr. West’s goal in Scale, and he takes it to places far beyond physics into the complex adaptive systems found in biology and human activities. His ideas have helped expand the way I see and think, including when I’m driving down the road in Sidra. I found the content, organization, and writing to be very good. The many historical digressions bring life to and a needed break from the science. Jim

Now that I have finished it my recommendation not only stands and indeed I can't give it enough praise. I've read hundreds possibly thousands of books and this is the best one yet. These people are insane but you can't help admiring them. Months on end completely alone in constant sixty mph winds surfing 60 ft waves in a 60 ft sailboat and in a race around the lowest navigable part of the globe with others doing the same. The nearest help should your lightweight carbon fibre boat hit an iceberg and fly apart or just be torn apart by the relentless south sea abuse is four days away. It's you, your boat and an ice filled raging ocean for months on end. You live in the most Spartan of conditions in a ten ft cabin with a single burner stove a bunk and a bucket for a toilet. These stories were originally published in the Saturday Evening Post in the 1920s, but they're just as funny now as they were back then. Aside from the fact that nobody has a cell phone, you almost can't tell they weren't written yesterday.
