Change walking around queen size bed of 31' to twin king sofa of 27'

Have anyone had experience to remove the walking around queen size bed and all cabinets around the bed frame? 31' model. Then put twin king sofa like 24' or 27' model? Because queen size bed is too small for me and husband, and I don't like the long cabinets around bedframe, make the space a lot smaller .

I think that would be a very big task to undertake. Remember the water tank is under the bed. 🚐

Ok, correct me if I'm wrong, but the only cabinets I see in the island bed area are the nightstands, and the overhead storage. Those cabinets won't impede access to anything but right at the head area, right? Are there storage cabinets under the bed along with the water tank? I haven't been inside any 31 footers, that weren't being lived in, and I was just a visitor. I don't recall seeing any at the factory. Even though I don't live too far away, I've only visited six or seven times in 20+ years. I try to avoid the L.A. traffic situation. RonB

wE HAVE THE 31 FT 2007 QUEEN ISLAND BED IT DOES HAVE 2 DRAWERS ON EACH SIDE UNDER THE MATRESS.

tHE 31 FOOT HAS MILES OF STORAGE SPACE ALL AROUND, SO MUCH SO, WE HAVE NEVER USED IT ALL UP EVAN ON

EXTENDED TRIPS 2-3MONTHS AT A TIME.

With a Lazy Daze, ANY significant changes will be a big deal because of how the mothership builds these. I would not want to take on a task like this.

Before you start, by ALL means find out what is under that bed so you know what you are getting into. Lazy Bones 2 said the water tank is under the bed. Moving that tank means significant plumbing work, and might not leave an accessible aisle between couches.

Do not assume that you can buy Twin King sofas to put in. You can't. They are built in place and depend on the end connections for part of the structure.

Not only is the water tank under the mattress but the water pump and it's associated plumbing lives there too. And then there are those drawers, two on each side, tucked up toward the head of the bed in front of the two wardrobes. And the whole assembly is integrated with and part of the closets and overhead cabinet.

Modification such as you mention would be nearly impossible IMHO! I'd never attempt anything like it. You'd be better off with the twin bed option.

Presuming you could remove it, where would you put it? I can't think of a better place than where it is now.

And I might also mention that directly under the floor below the water tank is the compartment where the spare tire lives.

There is also the full width storage under the head of the bed. Forward of that and behind the water tank is the (hopefully) little used spare tire. I consider a spare tire and water tank 'non-trivial' items.

It might be cheaper to get on the waiting list and post an ad for the IB when near completion.

I have seen a couple of 30 IB like mine, but never seen a 30 TK. So I dont know where they put the water tank, water pump. The tank on mine is right in the center of the bed and I would suspect that is the best place for a big heavy weight. My guess is that you would have to rebuild the entire rear of the coach. Sounds like a huge project. BTW, I went ahead and put my name on the list. There is no cost and although I doubt that I will buy a new RV, it doesnt hurt to hope.

Wendy, just to be clear, when you say you don't like "the long cabinets around bedframe," are you talking about these cabinets at the head of the bed?

Wendy, as others have said it would be a very large job to totally remodel that back area. It can be done but a lot of work and quite expensive if you need to hire someone to do the work.

It is possible to expand the bed size (living with the cabinets) but you would lose access to the side drawers at a minimum and at least one person would need to get out of bed by scooting down to the foot of the bed.

It is easier to start with a 31’ TB and add structure in between the two beds. If you wanted it to convert back and forth from a king size bed to two “Day beds” you would need to be creative, but it could be done reasonably easy. (In a TB, at least newer models, the water tank is under the passenger side bed and accessible from the outside bin door).

We opted for a permanent set up U shaped bed - with an opening of 37” deep and 13” wide at the middle foot end of the bed (we have this in our TK and plan to put it in a future 31’). That small opening works great to easily get out of bed and allows for some extra storage area (or a great pet hiding area). We created this in such a way it can easily be undone if the next owner wants the original setup.

Jane, I would love to see images of what you did I have a 2005 30' TB and on the rare occasions my other half goes with me it would be nice to have a bed we could share.

Juanita, I have not forgotten about this. I have it on my todo list to take some pictures. Since we have some holiday days off coming up that is a good excuse for me to take time for this.

With a 30' TB, especially since you don't want this permanent (e.g. used rarely), I would make it so it could easily be taken off/put back on.

I did a quick edit of a picture I found on the internet to show you about what the slot looks like. You can see the slot is created for how the man is laying (since the women is up higher on the bed, not in a sleeping position). The slot starts just below his hips so that if he sat up as if he was on the edge of a bed, his legs would naturally fall into the slot (that is how it works for us).

We have a cabinet alongside one of the beds, so our "king bed" dimensions were about 79" sideways and 71" front to back.
The slot is 34" long measuring from the foot of the bed. It is about 12-13" wide which is pretty narrow.
This is wide enough for one person to comfortably sit/stand with their feet in the slot (facing the outside sides of the LD), but not wide enough to comfortably stand / sit facing the front of the LD or for 2 people to stand in the slot at the same time. We wanted more bed and less slot, to better allow cuddling.
We do have to coordinate getting out of the bed one at a time, but with no slot we had to get from a laying position to the foot of the bed (wiggle, inch-worm, sit up and wiggle, or turn on belly and crawl) and with quilts that got in the way we would make jokes about fighting ocean waves to get to the foot of the bed. With the slot, we turn and lay facing the middle of the bed, sit up, stand and take a sideways step - easy peasy.

To make the slot (and support to hold the mattress between the two beds):
We used a 4'x8', 3/4" piece of plywood over the entire foot end of the bed with the center slot cut out. The trimmed down 4'x8' didn't fit in the LD (we tried several ways), so we ended up cutting it into 2 pieces. We put in support pieces for it (I started to write up details but it was taking too long and I don't have time right now for this). We had a mattress we made when we first got the LD (several foam layers glued together and placed inside a zippered mattress cover) and we just cut the slot into the mattress also.

However, for your setup I would try this instead:
Put a piece of plywood just between the two beds where you want more bed - at the height of the existing bed mattress bottoms. You need to put in some supports, something that will not hurt your legs when the plywood is taken off (maybe a strip of 1x2" wood running down the beds, you could even put some felt/rubber/something on it so that when you sat up on the bed the raw wood corners would not dig into the back of your calves/knees, or get creative with metal L shaped supports, that you slid onto a support, so that again there was not something left on the bed that was uncomfortable when you were sitting on the bed.
Then take a mattress piece (custom make a foam piece or get something similar to what you have on the beds) cut it a couple inches too big in both directions, so it will squish into the space and not create a split between the mattresses that would create a spot that would sink down because it was not supported well and the sides of the edges would collapse (yup, we discovered that in our playing). That means you also need a small ledge on your plywood that holds the mattress in so it doesn't drift towards the front of the LD.
You can put your mattress piece into a single bed zippered mattress cover and fasten it tightly around the new mattress piece.
You likely will need a topper piece to go over everything with the slot but out as you need to cover the cabinet between the beds - you want the entire mattress to be level so having one piece go across everything would help do that and any small ups and downs will be compensated for by the foam topper.

Of note, choose a mattress cover that is not slick/slippery/real smooth, but one that feels more like the typical sheet. The first one we got at Walmart, I think the MainStays brand, worked well. The second time Walmart didn't have the king in stock and the one Amazon shipped was the wrong size (package said king but mattress cover was a queen), so we did a quick trip to target and got what they had which was more slippery. It is harder to keep sheets on the more slippery one.
These covers are inexpensive enough instead of trying to clean it (things fall down around the outer edges and get underneath the mattress cover and even when we tried to keep on top of it, it does get dirty over times), we just bought a new one.

We use two different sheets for the bottom layer (overlapping, so that they can easily be tucked under the mattress around the slot edges).
And two different sets of covers on top - we have been using separate quilts for quite some time now... we like different temperatures to sleep as well as different heaviness of covers. This makes it easier to use the slot - each person folds their top covers away from the slot towards the outside of the LDs sit up and then stand, step sideways and they are away from the bed.
