Fuel tank replacement? October 08, 2020, 10:34:09 am Hi folks, does anyone know what fuel tank is a good replacement for the one on an 05 mid-bath LD? Mine is unfortunately quite rusted. Is it just a standard one for the Ford E450 or something else? I believe it’s a 55 gallon tank, and it’s for gas, not diesel. Having trouble finding one. Thanks a lot,Sasha

Re: Fuel tank replacement? Reply #3 – October 08, 2020, 12:24:07 pm You might look for a used fuel tank from the Southwest are, where rust isn't a huge problem.Be prepared for a big job removing the old and installing the new, it is big, heavy and awkward to handle. While you are at it, replace the fuel pump and all the hoses on top of the tanks. Fuel pump replacement | FlickrMake sure the old tank is completely empty, even containing a couple gallons of fuel will make it very unstable, it's like a small boat with water sloshing in its hull.Larry

Re: Fuel tank replacement? Reply #7 – October 08, 2020, 04:05:38 pm Have you had a knowledgable mechanic inspect the tank and tell you it needs replacing? The undercarriage of a truck or auto from a wet or, especially, snowy environment can be quite shocking to the unfamiliar eye. Before I spent, what, maybe $1500-2000 replacing the tank I'd want to know if this is just a cosmetic/superficial problem or if the tank really needs replacing for functional/safety reasons. A mechanic familiar with what to look for should be able tell you which. And, if the tank needs replacing due to rust, what else might need attention too. 3 Likes

Re: Fuel tank replacement? Reply #11 – October 09, 2020, 09:53:29 pm Sasha, I went back and reread your earlier posts from when you were looking for a Lazy Daze. I saw one that said you had an inspection of this LD before you bought it. Did the inspector examine underneath the rig? If so, what did they say about the under carriage? I would ask the inspector for a refund if they didn't inspect that.I live in the rustbelt; the photo of your tank and frame look like it was driven frequently in winter. I would suggest having the brake lines thoroughly inspected; you don't want to try stopping a heavy vehicle with a ruptured brake line. Rusted brake lines are a frequent problem in areas that salt the roads in winter.Good luck,Steve K 2 Likes

Re: Fuel tank replacement? Reply #13 – December 03, 2020, 06:14:28 am Indeed I did, talked to a mechanic and needed to bite the bullet. New tank alone from RockAuto ran me $1100. Quote from: Sullyboy61 - December 02, 2020, 07:27:28 pmJust wondering if you had to replace tank? Thanks ,Denis

Re: Fuel tank replacement? Reply #15 – December 03, 2020, 11:29:13 am Fuel tanks are very susceptible to rust. I had to replace my rear tank on an f250 diesel after 15 years of North Idaho winters. 1 Likes
