Pumping your own gas
I always said in the past - there are two things that would never happen in Oregon
1. No sales tax
2. Pumping your own gas
<sigh> I was 50% wrong.

OMG! I'm so used to pumping my own gas that I felt weird the first time I can went to Oregon and it was pumped for me. I didn't know what to do with myself while waiting.

I wonder if this will be permanent.

Well Glen, that doesn't seem very taxing.

Just in case folks wondered what happened. The 11th is upon us. Perhaps it will be extended.

Oregon will allow drivers to pump their own gas until at least April 11 in order to reduce contact that could spread the coronavirus and ensure that essential frontline workers have access to fuel during potential staffing shortages, the state fire marshal announced early Saturday morning.

Deb,
I was riding through Oregon on my motorcycle and stopped for gas.  The deal with motorcycles is that the attendant has to swipe your card in the pump, ask how much gas you want, and then they usually hand you the nozzle to pump your own gas as they watch.
I'm careful about filling my bike because I want a full tank, but no spillage or overflow on the paint.  Thus, I put my face (while wearing the helmet) right over the gas opening and watch it fill. When it was full I lifted my head up and smacked the attendant right in the nose with the back of my helmet.  He had put his head right above mine, watching me fill the tank.
He stumbled around a bit holding onto his nose and I apologized for bonking him in the schnoz.  He said "It's OK.  It has happened before."
It was all I could do to keep from laughing.

I'd not thought about an attendant pumping gas for decades (I think Missouri did away with them during the oil embargo in the '70s).  Was this a full-employment measure?  Is there a minimum age?  Do they check oil & clean the windows?

Are there any other states that still do this?

The first time I needed gas in Oregon, I was offended that some 'John Doe' thought that I needed help filling gas. I'd never heard of this growing up in California. I concluded that indeed it was some sort of full employment gimmick. Since then I have seen some pretty clueless people in gas stations here in southern California. Maybe they were from Oregon!  The few times in Oregon, I stood right there with them to make sure they didn't  screw up. (I've only been there a few times).  The locking cap on the LD, a Stant, is very complex to operate. After 20 years it has gotten pretty tempermental. Maybe their attendants are used to such caps. If I were ever to go into Mexico I would put a locking flap over the cap, so that I could make sure the pump was zeroed before the attendant starts pumping gas.   But the situation has gotten worse in Mexico. We get more direct news in San Diego, and a few fellow workers were Mexican citizens who lived across the border. Long commute for them.   RonB

For years I owned a truck.   I brought it new.   One day I was across the river in Washington.  I pulled into a gas station.  It then dawned on me I had no idea where the gas tank was........ true story.

ps Only New Jersey and Oregon mandate no self pumping of gas.
Why --   Over the years there has been debate pro and con.   My best guess today is we just don't want to get wet.  After all rains once and awhile here.

Was this a full-employment measure?
No.  The article that Joan posted a link to explains the original reasons for the law.

For the attendants?  Probably, but don't know for sure.

Nope.

New Jersey.

Although the law now allows self service in sparsely populated counties, we've yet to run into a station that doesn't have someone there to pump gas for you.

Ron,
Over the years, we have made many trips into Mexico.  The people and places are really delightful.  The police, however, are corrupt.  Other than police bribery, the only place where people constantly attempted to overcharge us were gas stations.  I would bring a calculator out of the truck, check the price per liter, made sure the pump was zeroed, and showed the attendant what the cost was.  Then I payed in pesos to avoid being screwed on the exchange rate.

To be fair, last fall my son and daughter drove to the Pacific coast to camp and surf.  The last 30 - 40 miles were on dirt roads near Guerrero Negro, about 450 miles south of the border.  Scotty got his fully loaded truck hopelessly stuck to the frame late in the afternoon and nothing he could do would get it out.  Two trucks with workers from the salt plant showed up, helped him extricate his truck, actually drove it through a difficult section of road, and would not accept any cash in appreciation.  They happily bid my kids goodbye after saving them from a cold night in the desert.

(Could the fact that my daughter is a pretty blonde gringo have anything to do with this?)

The legal requirement to pump your own gas in Oregon is silly. However it is a great entry level job. Especially in rural areas without MacDonalds or Mall stores. I like having my gas tank filled by an attendant and sometimes you do get your window washed :)

We were last in Oregon a few years ago for a FMCA rally in Redmond, OR (eastern).   We stopped for gas at an Indian reservation station and were told, hey, we don't care.  Pump your own gas!   So, we did.   Many years ago we were told it was all about full employment.    And, yes, many, many  years ago there were station attendants in CA - - and they even cleaned the windshield and checked the oil.   At some stations, they even wore spiffy uniforms.   Imagine!
Okay, hopping off the "remember when" train. . . . .

I spent two years in Oregon getting a marijuana farm up and running.
While there, I drove a 1978 Mercedes 240D as my daily driver.
When Fueling none of the fuel jockeys would have a problem with me filling up with diesel.
When on the motorcycle, same thing.
With the farm truck that used gasoline, not happening, they had to do it.

Jota,
Did you ever think we would see the day when we could casually admit "two years in Oregon getting a marijuana farm up and running"?
OK.  I'll come clean.  In the 70's I used to smuggle diesel across the border.  We bought it in Tijuana for 17c a gallon, in ten 50 gallon barrels on a flatbed truck.  After filling at the Pemex station, we'd go out to dinner and drive north across the border late in the evening.  The nice border guard would ask "where do you boys live?"  We'd tell the truth.  Then he'd say "Got anything to declare"?  Here we'd have to fudge it a little and say "no sir".  We'd head back to San Diego and sell it to a heavy equipment company.
For the sake of staying on topic, we pumped our own 500 gallons.
My buddy went on to smuggling birds.  I went back to commercial and scientific diving.
Of course, now pot is legal.  Smuggling is still a spank-able offense.

Thx, Glen for starting this thread; Joan, for such an interesting link, & also Linda.  Interestingly odd that the only two states are on opposite coasts.

So much to learn about the oddities & eccentricities--and finding the similarities/accepting the differences--that make us the US.  One of the things I enjoy about LDOG is that it's a sort of vicarious & virtual travel experience in itself.

Harold.
It was an interesting experience to say the least. When I was asked to go to Oregon to get the farm up and running, I thought this is crazy. Then upon seeing it completed and it's location, right on I-5 just south of Ashland, I realized that times were changing.
I grew up in Tucson, many illegal border crossings back in the early 70's, but mine were not for diesel. 8)

Some of Oregon's eastern rural counties let you pump your own gas.

It may have depended on which way you turned when you got off the exit ramp.  If you turn left, you almost immediately enter New Jersey.  Turn right to New York.  I found this out when I turned left to get gas at the first station I saw after exiting, and I had a fuel station employee wanting to pump the gas.  I said to him that I didn't know New York did that and he replied that I just entered New Jersey.  The lack of signs in the area don't help.  Bob
