Kids bunk
Hi all,

Just wanted to share a neat idea I came up with to maximize space for sleeping. If any of you have kids, this could be a great option for an extra bunk. My wife and I use the over-cab sleeper because it’s a full queen, and we didn’t want the little one going to sleep on the fold-out couch, as we would then not have much space to relax once he’s asleep. So....I made a bunk out of half in plywood to fit the contour of the passenger seat and engine ‘hump’, with a few little chocks to make it all sturdy and level. We have outside window covers, so he feels pretty cozy.

Hope this is useful :-)

Good use of the space, it's something I have not seen here in years.

We camped for years with friends who owned a Twin/King (what your floor plan is called). Their daughter took over the bunk, a place where she could hide out by herself or with an invited friend, pulling the bunk's curtain provided separation from the adults. Consider this as your child grows older.
It worked well for them.

This is a creative solution for a "kid nest".  A suggestion: Some kids are curious, crafty little "button pushers" (in more ways than one), and there are quite a few "buttons" in the cab. Just sayin'....  ;)

Yes, indeed...my mother had an Edsel back in the early '60s with a push button gear shift in the center of the steering column/wheel, and I remember "typing" on that many times (back in the days when she'd leave us in the car for a quick run into the grocery store)--it's a miracle I (& others) have survived some of my cluelessness through the years.  ::)

Really cool kid nest.  I have a small Fisher-Price sleeping bag that the then 4 y/o granddaughter preferred to bunking with either me or her sister when they'd have sleepovers in GramBG's House in the driveway, but she didn't want to sleep in the living room area, so she'd roll out her nest between the BR & shower (which made night time excursions a bit tricky, but fortunately she'd sleep like a log).

Looking forward to hearing more of your adventures--

In our ‘74 VW Type 2 (Transporter) bus we had a cot for our son that spanned the front seats above the level of the relatively flat steering wheel. Small brackets with a “cup” hung from the bottom of the window frames, and the rails of the cot fit into each cup to hold it all up. Worked flawlessly and was easy to fold up and stow away. I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t handle an adult’s weight, but quite adequate for a child. Sometimes I miss the simpler days. — Jon

:D yes indeed, kids are most definitely button pushers. He likes to pretend to drive, and I should probably put a lock on the column shifter, good point. But hey, we are normally concerned with him falling over board, so it will be a pleasant surprise to see him exploring a less dangerous boundary.

Great to hear all the creative use of small spaces. Any pics of the VDuB cot bed??? I’ve owned many a VW and would love to see it.

Compact quarters - as any familiar with the FL model knows, it sleeps 2 comfortably in the cabover or the foldout couch - but not easily at the same time. We had friends visit our campsite in Yellowstone, and pulled out the couch just far enough to squeeze two slim adults there with their 8-yr old son in a sleeping bag on the floor in front of the fridge. We and our 2 cats slept in the bunk, and could still use the ladder for access to the WC. So, I'm claiming we can sleep 7 in comfort.

I keep telling Cyndy that the Lazy Daze is like a proper boat:  Sleeps two, feeds four, and drinks six.

She keeps piling children and grandchildren into it for trips none-the-less.

About 10 years ago, I experienced a lapse in dot-connection and agreed to meet my sister, her three dogs, two of her kids and 5 of their kids at Half Moon Bay. The deal was that the tribe would drive down from their homes on the Peninsula, join me at my campsite, hang out and roast hot dogs with the kids, and then everybody would go home and leave me to camp in peace in my rig for a couple days.

Summers on the CA coast can be foggy, chilly, and windy; it was foggy, chilly, and windy. "I'm cold!" "Can we eat inside?" "Why can't I piddle in the toilet in the RV?" "Get the dogs off the couch!" There's sand in my potato salad!" "Can I sleep up there tonight?" "What does this button do?" "Do not put the rest of your hot dog down the toilet!" "No, Sister, you can't borrow my RV to go to Yellowstone." "Aunt Joan, I can't stand up in here; you need a much bigger RV!"

You get the drift....sand tracked in everywhere, mustard and ice cream smeared on the couch covers, a couple dog fights, "Mom, she's touching me; make her stop!", sister, tall nephews, their wives, 5 kids, 3 dogs (and me) packed into a TK. (I could drink beer then; this was a very good thing.)

"This was fun; can we do it again?"  (Not in my lifetime!) :o

In 2006, after the 50th Anniversary Grand Caravan in Cheyenne, we camped at the Boulder County Fairground for five days.
On the 4th of July, we had a salmon BBQ dinner for nine, right when the food was ready to serve, the sky opened up and it came down in buckets for over a half-hour. So, what else to do but stuff nine friendly folks into a 23.5' LD.
Soon after dinner, the sky cleared and we had a ringside seat for the fireworks and ice cream.
it doesn't get anybetter than this.

It's these types of events that form the best memories.
