Ceiling Wrinkle repair April 03, 2020, 08:13:28 am When my Roof was washed and inspected, they discovered a leak around front vent in living area. It's been fixed but now there are wrinkles in the ceiling. Is there a way to smooth them out? 2005 30' TBJuanita

Re: Ceiling Wrinkle repair Reply #2 – April 03, 2020, 11:00:48 am I agree that a photo of the 'wrinkles' would be helpful; the roof (exterior) surface does flex and give, but I think that the issue is that the leak caused the surface of the ceiling (interior) to buckle. AFAIK, the ceiling material is a plastic-coated composite about 1/8" thick; from the description of the issue, it seems that the plastic coating of the water-damaged composite buckled/wrinkled. Someone might offer alternate suggestions, but I don't know of any 'fix' except replacement of the damaged ceiling area. YMMV, as always. 1 Likes

I would take steps to make sure the area dries completely. Exact steps would depend on the situation, but it might involve removing a piece of the ceiling board to let air circulate.Rich'03 MB in NC 1 Likes

This should give an idea of the extent of damage, and allow access to arrange clamping to flatten out the wrinkles, if that is a feasible solution.Steve 1 Likes

I would be more worried about rot in the ceiling and to insured the leak has been found and sealed.It's a little late now but this is the type of thing that a professional inspection would have found. If you have not already done so, you still might want to have it inspected for any other problems you have not found yet.LDs are some of the simplest and best-built RVs available but there are still dozens of things that go wrong with them as the years and miles accumulate.Pulling the interior vent trim will show the vent's wood framing but doesn't allow seeing inside the roof nor allow access to the wrinkled area.Yes, a photo or two would be useful and might suggest a way to cosmetically improve the look.Larry 1 Likes

When this issue was uncovered. I had a another fan installed and they discovered the original vent was leaking where the paint on the trim had cracked. Even though the seal around the window had been in very good condition with no visible cracks.Juanita
Re: Ceiling Wrinkle repair Reply #8 – April 03, 2020, 04:24:40 pm The plastic covering is ‘melded’ to the composition board; IMO, when the board got wet, the moisture caused the board to warp and buckle, and the plastic overlay separated slightly from the surface. *If* the leak has been repaired, I believe that this is a cosmetic ‘live with it’ issue. 2 Likes

Then I would just live with the paneling as is. Our old motor home's antenna leaked so I removed it and patched the roof. If it happens to this one, the same thing will happen again.Jon 1 Likes

This will depend on your ability to acquire the necessary parts. You would need a hypodermic needle/syringe with a fine gauge needle and some very thin adhesive. It will take "injecting" in several spots, thus the fine gauge needle. Carefully inject the adhesive and, at the same time, gently and carefully smooth the ceiling surface with your hand. You might also consider using a small piece of cardboard such as an envelope-size piece of the backing material from a package of stationery paper or even heavy card stock. Something that will help flatten the vinyl ceiling material without tearing it. I would think this very thin vinyl laminate would stretch easily, so this will be a tricky job. Like what I have heard some people do to faces that wrinkle? I am not sure how that would work if the surface is bonded to the paneling, it seems it would be hard to get adhesive between that outer layer and the wood it is bonded to. I agree, the wrinkles are right under the TV antenna and they are known to leak, often coming down the coax cable opening.If the wrinkles are loose bubbles, where the plastic surfaces has lifted from the paneling, Juli's suggestion to inject a thin glue and then flattening the bubbles by pressing them flat is an interesting fix.If the plywood under the surface coating has swelled, live with it.Larry 2 Likes

IF the vinyl "wallpaper" in what I think it is: A very thin vinyl wallpaper originallly laminated to a thin plywood. The wrinkles would appear to be a case of de-lamination with an air pocket between the vinyl and the plywood. Injection of adhesive would be in that air pocket - between the wallpaper and the plywood. The thin viscosity of adhesive would be important. In effect, it would be a process of "gluing" the wallpaper to the plywood. Hope that explanation is clear.I think trying to slice into those air pockets would be a mistake as it would mean yet more damage. Again, embrace it and call it good!Juli WMinden, NV
