Trailer adapter for 2005 February 21, 2020, 08:42:44 pm Hi,Does anyone have a link to an adapter that fits the trailer plug in the back of the 2005 models? I have seen several threads on the subject and ordered 2 different adapters, none fit. It is the round plug with 4 pins.

LD has used Pollack connectors for some years. Assuming this to be true for 2005, that would answer that part of your question. As Andy said, you also need to consider the trailer or towed vehicle wiring when looking for an "Umbilical" cable or adapter. Importantly, there are several wiring conventions for trailers and RVs, each with slight variations in the number of wires, color coding and position for the 12v+, ground, and the various running lights. In my newer LD, the towing wire diagram (including color, position and function of each of the six wires now supplied), are shown in the manual. If your manual does not include this information I'm sure that the factory or perhaps another forum member can provide a diagram for you. You'll need to study both the LD manual and the similar wiring diagram for whatever it is you are towing. Once you understand the connections you are trying to make, you can at least speak intelligently to e-Trailer or your near-by trailer & hitch shop.Good Luck!Warren 1 Likes
Re: Trailer adapter for 2005 Reply #3 – February 22, 2020, 04:43:44 pm I was not able to find the 2005 Ford E-450 or Lazy Daze option on etrailer.com to narrow down specific parts. Page 77 of the Lazy Daze instruction manual does have info about the Trailer plug, but does not specify the specific "four pole trailer plug." The instruction manual also has the wiring diagram in the back, but no specifics on the adpater. The two adapters I have purchased so far are a smidge too large in circumference to fit in the hole.

Etrailer is just trying to give visitors an easier way to find thing that are specific to vehicle manufacturers. This is the 4 pin connector that plugs into the trailer connector provided by Lazy Daze in earlier days. (Steve and Jill) The four wires provided are: ground, running lights, left brake/turn and right brake/turn. In more modern times LD went to a six pin, and by now (I hope) the so called 'universal RV' 7 pin (Hopkins) connector. I hate those four-pin ones. They don't make especially good contact because of the small pins, the friction fit means they're not very secure, yet they're a pain to insert and remove... just an inferior design all around. 1 Likes

I always install 7-pin plug, it doesn't cost that much extra to upgrade.The extra pin or wires can be used for controlling the towing brake or having an indicator light on the LD's dash showing when the toad's brakes are applied. An extra wire can also be used to keep the toad's battery charged. To our LD, I added a 7-pin and replaced the 4-pin with a better plug. Both plugs get used regularly, the 7-pin for towing and 4-pin for the bike rack's tail lights. Larry 1 Likes

Just now I ran outside and looked at the bottom of the tire cover and low and behold, there is a socket with it's cover intact. Not sure if and when I will tow but I am thinking my 66 beetle at 1800 lbs would be my TOAD.

I always carried a pair of clean, white cotton gloves to wipe the windows when they frosted up. It's light but, legally, a toad brake system is still required . One bit of advice, stay out of head-on accidents .We had a lot of fun with the VWs years ago, and wandered all around the southern deserts with nothing extra other than better tires and an engine skid plate.It would go places that didn't seem possible for a two-wheel drive vehicle.My last VW, a cherry 1967, was sold to my aunt and uncle who towed it behind their two motorhomes for over decade.Sure wish I had it back, in the condition is was when it was sold.Ex-VW nut and mechanicLarry 1 Likes

The bug was also easy to push; I found this out when I miscalculated the effect of a headwind and ran out of gas on Highway 2 between Sonoyta and Mexicali. Almost made it! 1 Likes

Re: Trailer adapter for 2005 Reply #13 – February 29, 2020, 05:42:46 pm Sorry about that Joseph. I found mine, but it just has 'readywire' with no numbers. It is a molded plug with four wires coming out of it. (white, brown, green yellow) The diameter is 3/4", depth of insertion 1/2", 1/8" slot about 1/16" deep for a key. It has a T handle to pull on it with. I don't remember if this is one I got with the motorhome or if I bought it. My first suggestion is to get the matching four pin socket that does match the new plug you have, and replace the socket on the tire cover on your LD. Should be pretty easy to do. There is a possibility that the socket LD provided in 2005 was near extinction then, and by now the proper plug is really rare. RonB
