Anyone using a cover for their LD?
As we consider purchasing a new rig I'm trying to figure a good way to protect it between trips.

Living in coastal San Diego (Encinitas) my number one concern is morning dew which is mixed with ocean air. The sun is a factor also but not as much.

I am looking for a quality cover that breathes yet protects from this ocean air. I know they are a pain in the butt 😀 however I'll need coverage.

I thought of building a carport but that would do little to keep off the dew.

When our LD was new, I tried a cover. Our neighborhood is often subjected to sudden, strong breezes.
While coving the rig, a wind came up that almost threw me off the top. That was the end of using the cover.
I figured it was cheaper to repaint the rig every ten years that it was to suffer the injuries or death caused by falling off.

Actually a carport will likely reduce or eliminate the dew, reduce effects of the sun. To determine it, I would rig up enough large tarps to completely shield the roof, and support it with temporary wood posts (2X2) and guy ropes. Keep it taut and angle it enough any dew will drain off. If it works, a permanent one would be a good investment. Any cover that touches the roof or sides will likely cause more damage than nothing at all.

A dirty cover, in a good breeze can also damage the paint. The rig and cover need to be clean before covering.
Wind blown dust and dirt can act like sandpaper when they get under a cover.
Personally, I would want a garage, a carport or nothing at all.

I use a cover, like it, and have talked about it here (it's in the archives).

I have also spent some time close to the Atlantic coast.  I don't think a cover is going to be helpful at all when it comes to the ocean air.

Your choices are to either (a) accept it as part of the price for living near the water or (b) find a storage site somewhere inland.

We get people who decide to move/retire/spend summers along the NC coast.  Many move a few miles inland after watching the salt air destroy everything for a few years.  I've seen fiberglass sides RVs parked/stored near the beach and the outside fades/corrodes substantially faster than it would inland.

Some boaters spray a product like this on this boat/trailer every couple of weeks during the off season (while the boat is sitting on land under a carport type cover) and they think it helps.

In reality, given enough time, the salt always wins.

Regarding ocean air and its effect on the Lazy Daze kept under a cover, our experience suggests that it depends on how far away from the water you live. We're in coastal Santa Cruz about 2 miles from the ocean. The cover has been on since our TK was new except for when we're camping (not enough yet because we're still working full time).

So far I haven't noticed any rusting or corrosion I would expect to see from the salty air. Maybe it's being 2 miles away. Maybe the cover is helping a little, I'm not sure. But, I wanted to give you our report in case it helps.

If I could build a carport on our property, I would prefer it to our cover. Because as Larry said, it can be dangerous putting on and taking off the cover. I've figured out how to do it alone usually with little risk. But, you just never know when a gust of wind might come along as Larry experienced.

If you do decide to go with a cover, take a look at Cal Mark, a local Californian company. They are costlier than other covers but very good quality!
