Some good news for Yellowstone.
It brings tears to my eyes to know the jackalopes are back at Yellowstone after the over-hunting which came close to ending the species.

Snipe hunters turned to jackalopes after killing the last free range Wyoming Snipe (Raphus snipus, Lynne 1776)  115 years ago.  

The slaughter was unbelievable - trainloads of jackalope hunters would arrive from the east, shooting the helpless jackalope, and having them stuffed to send home as souvenirs.

Jackalopes are making a reappearance here in Colorado as well!

In times past us old salty Airdales used buckets of propwash to trap said jackalops  .  Frankly I'm amazed they are still running wild.  Last I heard they were all wiped out.

Shortly after reporting aboard my first ship, the old salts tried to fool me. I was too clever to fall for the “go to the mess decks and get us 50 foot of chow line” bit;  but they got me on “go see the Airdales and get a bucket of propwash.”  Hey, I was only 18 . . . what did I know?  :o

Airdale, airedale - Naval aviator, aka 'BROWNSHOE'. Can also refer to any member of the aviation community, officer or enlisted. From envy, often modified by non-aviation types with the adjective "f……g"

Wait, I went snipe hunting back in the late 70s/early 80s, so the Western Desert Snipes were around at least that late.  It might have been a different branch of the species than the free range Wyoming Snipes.  While I didn't see any in the 15 minutes of hunting, others reportedly had recently seen them so I am sure they were still around.   :D
