Flat Tire? August 08, 2019, 08:07:25 pm I left Denver today, headed for the Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP. SW of Denver, and climbing the Kenosha pass and near 9000', I heard a loud pop. Crikey! I shouted. My first flat tire. I stopped at the summit turnout and could find no flat tire. Later I stopped for lunch and opened the cupboard for my new bag of potato chips. You guessed it. It had loudly blown apart at the high altitude. What fun.Chris 7 Likes

Re: Flat Tire? Reply #2 – August 08, 2019, 08:30:11 pm Chris, glad it was only a bag of chips and not a tire! We experience similar effects frequently whenever we grocery shop, especially if we shop down in Bakersfield since it involves a 5,200 ft. elevation change to get home. Be careful with those carbonated beverages!

Re: Flat Tire? Reply #4 – August 08, 2019, 10:04:57 pm While in Yellowstone a while back, I witnessed the aftermath of a surprising explosion that had occurred overnight while my DW and I slept. In the morning, while taking our bikes off the rack in preparation for a peaceful ride around the West Thumb amenities, I found that my 10-Speed’s rear tire’s inner tube had exploded. Apparently the increased altitude had caused the tube to expand beyond its capacity. I had inflated the tire to its maximum pressure of 110 psi the day before. Now, while at higher altitudes, I keep the pressure about 10 pounds below the max. Flats of any kind are a real PITA. I’m glad I wasn’t standing next to it when it blew. It would have scared the heck out of me. 🤯Kent 3 Likes
