Tinted windows
I know there have been many past posts related to this topic, but I'm wondering if any one has recently (Last several years) had windows replaced and then tinted so as to get the same darkness as when purchased.

My current 2006 MB has the fogged window syndrome and Lazy Daze is quoting an incredibly high price to replace with no commitment as to when they can get to it.

The place in Oregon is a good price for 1/2" laminate windows but they are in Oregon.  The real issue is that they have two shades of dark and I am afraid that the darkest shade would not be dark enough.

Could a tint be added to the new glass?   Has anyone recently actually solved the fogged window syndrome with success that provides the dark window we previously enjoyed on a new Lazy Daze?

There are shops that disassemble the windows, clean and polish the glass and then reassemble with new rubber in between the glass panes.
Cost is around $500 a window. Dual windows count as two windows.
It’s not cheap but still less expensive than replacement.

I don’t know if any of the locations would work because I don’t know if the glass would be dark enough.  I would love to see one here in Southern California but not sure if anybody has actually used them with success.
This fogged window problem is a real pickle.  I am aware of several suggested solutions but not sure if anyone on this board has actually used one, other than the mothership.

Curious if you have used one of these or personally know anyone that did?

Jack, I know people have done the "disassemble windows and reassemble" routine.  I bet doing a search for fogged windows would come up with some names that you could PM.

We did in 2016 with RV Glass solutions. Posted about it here. Life's Little Adventures: Windows Update and Back at McDowell

We only had the slider portion failing and had those done at a cost of $325 per window. I believe they add another $125 if they have to do both halves. They give a 2-year warranty and one of ours has shown signs of failing but it was after the 2 years.

If it were me I would try to go with the thicker solid piece rather than this although I'm not sure if they will fit. One possible downside is they add about 10 pounds per complete window. The cost was the same but we weren't convinced the color was a satisfying match. If I had it to do over I would probably put up with that. You could pay the approximately $1,200 for new windows that will only likely fog again.

Good input and very interesting.  I've edited my response because I didn't completely understand at first.  It now makes perfect sense.  Good blog by the way.  Thanks

They showed me a sample of the laminated glass at RV Glass but it was difficult to tell about the color and they only offered one color. It looked close but it may have been lighter. It's hard to compare without it being in the frame. According to them, the thickness is critical in terms of whether or not it will fit the existing window frame. I'm not even sure if it would fit our windows. If I recall correctly they told me their glass was 7/16". If you haven't called RV Glass in Oregon I would see what they had to say about the fit.

There is a place in Vancouver, Washington too that cuts their own glass but I can't recall the name.

Jackie, I have an older LD [98] and they are the 9% laminate safety glass...don't know what the two you are looking at are. But when I had to have a window replaced they used some ugly orangey tinted safety glass..made them replace it with the original grey.

To clarify Gini’s statement of 9% tint, that means that 9% of the light can get through, correct? In other words, pretty dark!

Greg, I don't know if that's the correct interpretation ...anyone else know? I assumed it meant the amount of "grey" or tint in the glass make up

I've actually gotten the written quote from RV Glass Solutions (less that $1800 total for the 4 windows) but not clear to me how to interpret what they mean by their percentage of shade/light.  I love the Lazy Daze shaded glass and how you can see so clearly out yet the people outside can't see inside (before the fogging).

I am thinking of pursuing Nagco in Pamona.  It is my understanding they get the glass from Hehr.  Then Nagco  builds and seals the glass into the frame which they then deliver to Lazy Daze?

Has anyone actually gone straight to Nagco and will they remove/replace the glass in the Lazy Daze?

Early on, like, 1998 or so, I had a passenger side window replaced at Nagco because at that time they were the only ones recommended to do the replacement..it wasn't that expensive somewhere around $200/300 for the work. They were wonderful folks, did a  great job. The other window replaced in 2005 was done in AZ and they were the ones I had to force to redo the window. They ordered it from Hehr.

We have a 2006 MB.  Our back lounge windows were terribly fogged so we searched out the closest company which turned out to be Suncoast Designs in Hudson Florida.  We had to wait three months to get an appointment.  We arrived to a gravel parking lot with water and electric.  They would have allowed us to stay in the unit while they worked on it, but we had friends in the area so we chose to stay with them.  They took the windows out, took them inside, cleaned and reinstalled them for $250 per window.  We had the three large windows in the rear cleaned, the dinette window and the door window.  They matched what we had almost perfectly.  We had them done in Feb of this year.  So far no fails.  They offer a lifetime warranty for as long as we own the unit.  We know at least three other couples from the SELD group that have used this company.

The one issue we had:  The installers left a black residue of handprints on the back of our unit above the large window that they could not remove.  They told us it was because we had "gel paint".  LOL.  We called Vince at the factory and he laughed so hard at that comment!!  He said the residue was from the window gasket and sealer and told us to use a VERY SMALL amount of acetone to remove, we did, and the residue came off without removing the clear coat.  In addition, they left a few scratches on the paint getting the windows out, but I guess that is to be expected since Lazy Daze does such a great job of sealing the windows (and everything else)!!

So that is our experience with our windows.  We would happily do it again.  We can now actually see the lake we back up to.  And we know if they fail for as long as we own the unit, we will drive back down and have them re-cleaned.

I would like to add that near the same time that we had our windows cleaned, we replaced our Bilstein shocks with Monroe RV shocks.  We feel that the Bilstein's rough ride may have contributed to our losing the seal in the windows.

Good input.  I have learned that Nagco only does single pane glass windows.  RG Glass Solutions could put in 1/2” glass that was slightly green.  Not good.
It gets down to the mothership doing this at a high price, or the cleaning of existing windows which will last 2 to 5 years.  I shall dwell on this.

Will be interested to hear about the ride on the Monroe shocks

Jeanne and Ed,
How do you like your Monroe shocks and how do they compare to the Bilsteins?

We have new shocks on our todo list and I checked today while at the tire store (a value on the stem extenders was not tightened correctly at install and was causing a slow leak).  They focused on Monroe shocks -  I had not heard of that brand before.

Don't mean to be changing the subject mid-thread here, but we love our Monroe RV shocks.  After 100k+ miles and two trips up the Al-Can, you would expect us to have a hard ride.  But truthfully, since day one (we bought the rig new) we've always had a hard ride on the Bilsteins, just ignored it, blamed it on the bad roads.  Since we switched over to the Monroes, lowered the tire pressure just a bit, replaced the bushings, and had the front end aligned, we've got a nice smooth ride.  Made a big difference on how the LD reacts to the 18 wheelers, too.  We don't get sucked in near as much.  We highly recommend the Monroe RV shocks.

By they way, a little shout out to Atel, the fleet repair company in Beltsville Maryland that did the work for us.  Great people, reliable work, a little pricey, but mom always said, "You get what you pay for!!"
