Can I avoid the high passes to Aspen? April 27, 2019, 12:03:31 am I'm moving too the Glenwood Springs, CO area coming from Minnesota. Can I avoid the high passes. I'll be pulling a Toyota 4Runner on a car hauler.I've pulled the same setup from Northern Minnesota to Hot Springs AR twice without issues.I know there is no way I can pull this setup from Denver to Aspen.Thoughts?PS: What type of rear brakes does a 2002 30 LD have? Disk or pads??Many thanks!Mark

Disk or pads??Considering you live on the eastern side of the Continental Divide and Glenwood Springs is on the Western side, you need to cross somewhere . Your LD is overloaded pulling the 4-Runner and the trailer, it's putting a lot of strain on the transmission BTDT. Screw it up and you are looking a $5000+ repair.Hope you have a transmission temperature gauge, definitely consider installing a larger transmission cooler.Larger transmission cooler E450 | FlickrI suggest dumping the trailer and 4-Runner before climbing the grade up and through the Eisenhower Tunnel and then hitching a ride back to collect the 4-Runner, with it pulling the trailer. You may need to make two trips, one with the LD, if the 4-Runner cannot tow the trailer. The rear end has disc brakes, just like the front, both have brake pads.Larry 1 Likes
Re: Can I avoid the high passes to Aspen? Reply #2 – April 27, 2019, 02:45:57 pm It might help to just take I-80 across and turn south towards Baggs. That way you are already over the continental divideat a point less stressful to the RV.
Re: Can I avoid the high passes to Aspen? Reply #3 – April 28, 2019, 04:02:06 pm Hi Larry-I realize my setup is not ideal. I've been looking at CRVs and RAV4. I don't travel a lot. Point A to Point B and staying put for a while. I also thought about dropping the 4Runner in Denver when I drop off the car hauler at UHaul. There is no way I would attempt to pull this rig over the passes.Mark
