3M 5200 FC Adhesive/Sealant
Just got my first tube of this to use in sealing a few cracks in the end cap trim on our new "used" LD.  My son is a marine mechanic in Michigan, so I asked if he was familiar with it.  He said it is a great product.

Specifically, he said:  "5200 is an adhesive.  We hang outboards with it.  We put bolts in to make the customers happy."

Thought you experienced 5200 users might get a chuckle from that.

After 30 years of using it, I'm still impressed with how well and long it works, easily beating any other sealant/adhesive I have used in marine and RV work .
It is expensive and messy and worth every penny.
Get the 5200 Fast Cure, the regular 5200 stays tacky for days and can take a week or more to fully cure, where the Fast Cure is done overnight.
Disposable gloves and masking tape are your friends. Mask off any thing you do to want sealed.

Where do you use 5200? I use PL S40 (white) and Dap 3.0 (clear) in different areas depending on need.

I seem to recall Todd mentioning the MS uses PL throughout the rig.

Where do you use 5200? I use PL S40 (white) and Dap 3.0 (clear) in different areas depending on need.

End Caps, roof seams, window perimeters, floor and roof penetrations and any place an optimal sealant/adhesive is needed.

With as much work as resealing the roof, windows and end caps requires, I use the best products available .
The 3M line of 4200 and 5200 polyurethanes are all marine-use rated.
The PL S40 is for construction use, not marine, checking the Loctite/data sheet shows not to use it for underwater applications, where the 5200 is made for this application. If you live or camp in wet climates, many of the resealed items, on the roof for example, can have long term exposure to water. I want something that isn't effected by water and can stay wet permanently without failing .

In my experience, the clear Dap 3.0 doesn't holdup well in the long term, it is lacking in tensile strength and UV resistance.
Its main advantage is being clear, so it isn't noticeable when sealing seams in colored areas.
If the owner is OK with a white line passing through a colored area, I use 5200 FC. If not, the Dap 3.0 is used, since 5200 is not available in clear, only in black and white . I expect the clear Dap 3.0 will need resealing much soon than polyurethane.

I found the Dap 3.0 on my endcap seams really attracted dirt and grime so it defeated the "clear" look.

Hi,

We are working on a Chris Craft restoration.  3M 5200 also comes in mahogany color.

3M 5200 Fast Cure, the product that I believe most of us have used to seal windows, end caps, and several other things, comes only in black or white.  ;)

I was curious about the advertised 'curing' times of the 5200 vs. the 5200 fast Cure. The product description from the 3M website of the regular 5200 states that it cures in 24 hours; no mention of how long it takes to 'skin over', but from some reports I've read from those who used this product instead of the Fast Cure, the sealant stays sticky/goopy for a lot longer than the Fast Cure. The Fast Cure is "Tack-free in 1-2 hours and typically cures within 48 hours." It's the 'tack free' feature of the product that appeals to me (and probably to others); faster 'skin over' means less chance of dirt, bugs, and assorted other stuff getting on/into the sealant lines.

I ordered some 5200 a few days ago to use on the top corner of our roof. (You know, the section that sits under the lake.)

As far as Loctite PL S40 goes, I'm pretty sure Todd said that's what they use to seal new rigs. Maybe he meant just internally - or, also externally, but they don't anticipate parts of the vehicle actually being under water.

If LD doesn't use PL S40 for the roof, does anyone know what the MS uses?

Lastly, on the Loctite canister, it says "Not recommended for underwater applications". Funny - sort of - that we have to anticipate using marine grade sealant.

So, I rec'd my 1 oz tube of 5200 from Amazon for the sum total of $12. I think it may be enough to cover 6-12" inches or so.

Question: how do people seal their RVs with 5200 if it's this expensive? Or, did I somehow pay too much? Or, are larger tubes (if available) priced accordingly lower for larger scale applications?

Was there some reason that you ordered the 1 oz. tube instead of the 3 oz. tube or the 10 oz. cartridge? None of it is 'cheap', but buying the larger tube or the cartridge, if it's appropriate to your intended use, affords considerable savings.

YMMV, as always.

I got a 3 oz tube from Amazon for $12.  I bought this amount because I'm only going to use it for sealing a few cracks in the end caps (front and back).

For larger jobs, the 10oz tubes, used with a caulking gun, is the way to go. It's easier to control with a gun.

My local Home Depot sometimes carries 10oz tubes for around $18.  You can check inventory online if you have stores in your area.

Thanx for the replies. Now that I've publicly outed myself as an over-paying fool. LOL  O:)

Here's the thing: we buy a ton of stuff off of Amazon. We've been prime for over 10 years, and I just instinctively go there assuming it's the best price/deal.

With respect to the 5200 size, I didn't even think - I just assumed it was the standard cartridge used in a caulking gun. Now that I go back, I've got to laugh (a bit):

3M 5200FC Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200 Fast Cure White, 06535, 1 oz tube...

I've done this a few times now as different size options are offered, without really noticing the price differential. So, get to return my mini 1oz (for free) and get the 10oz. Jeez.

Again, thanx for the input.
