Generator on/off switch acting strange
The switch inside my 95 TK won't start the generator.
I need to use the external switch on the generator itself.
After the generator is running the inside switch lights up, the hour meter works, and I can shut it down using this switch.
It just won't kick it over to start. Dead.

Hi Ted. Just off the top of my memory, (I'll go check it out in a while) The power needed to start your generator from the inside has an inline fuse near the generator. The light that lights up on the switch, and runs the hour meter is a separate line. (otherwise your light would always be on, and the hour meter wouldn't stop)   RonB

What is strange is that that switch can only shut off the generator.

Hi Ted. Yes the power to run the light and hour meter keeps a relay on, that allows the generator to stay on. Like the difference in a car between 'on', and 'start'. Pushing the 'off' button inside opens that circuit to stop the generator, and doesn't require the 'start' switch to have power. In addition to the fuse (most likely) it could be a partially unplugged or otherwise bad connection at the generator, damaged wiring harness, or unplugged wire at the start switch. You can inspect those wires by pushing the entire switch panel upward to unlatch it from the wall. That is to access the wiring for the tank monitors, water pump, etc. For every body else I think that 'feature' went away in 2000, when the controls moved to the vent hood over the stove top. RonB

Mine appears to be 4 screws.

I tested all the wires and none gave me any voltage reading.

Hi Ted. OK well I guess yours is different than mine but not much. Not having voltage on any of the lines sounds like the generator logic board isn't supplying the voltage to the remote start switch. The good thing is it does start, and run normally when you use the on-generator switch. I copied this from Mike at a place I found with Google. (I didn't look fast enough and then lost it.....)
"I had an identical problem with my Motorhome generator remote and it presented it self exactly the same your problem did.You might want to check the internal circuit board located behind the generator mounted run / stop switch panel. Dismount the board and unplug both connectors. Inspect both the broadside and the cable side of connectors for any discoloration or contaminants. Next you might check the board itself. While the board is coated with some type of clear sealer some of the component leads may be exposed to the elements. I had to use a magnifying glass, and look at the board very carefully. In my case I had board # 3764, and found the lead to C-1 a capacitor that is in the remote start switch path had corroded open. I was able to solider the lead back to the board trace. That fixed it.
If you cant find the problem you may have to replace the board itself. Onan has four different boards all are around $200.00 each or EBay may have some as well for less money. Make sure you get the right board number located on the trace side of the board. Good luck!

Some of the schematics I saw online had to be similar to what we have. Two resistors, a cap, a switch and connectors just can't be worth $200!  The board should be repairable. There has to be a bad fuse on the wire running to the remote start panel, or something is disconnected somewhere.....    RonB

Hi Ted. Did you ever discover what the problem was with your remote generator switch?  RonB
