Power from coach batteries for rodent repeller device June 15, 2019, 11:46:36 am I want to install an electronic rodent repeller device (Amazon.com : Fanhome Rodent Repellent car Rat Repellent car car Rat Repeller...) in my engine compartment. Time will tell whether that helps. I want this device to be connected to the coach batteries. Where in the engine compartment can this be done? I also would appreciate if people who have the same device could give me tips where best to place the led's. Thanks.Klaus As an Amazon Associate Lazy Daze Owners' Group earns from qualifying purchases.
Re: Power for Rodent Repeller Device Reply #1 – June 15, 2019, 12:22:10 pm Klaus,I’ve no experience with your device, but I’ve read good things about adding string LEDs (12volt) under the hood as nighttime deterrent from rodents. I have a setup but have never installed it. I’ve been hanging Fresh Cab under the hood since we got our LD. So far so good. You may want to use a rechargeable 12 volt battery pack rather than drawing power from the chassis battery. I’ve killed mine by accident. Not a welcome surprise. Chassis batteries can drain quickly.Just a thought.Kent
Re: Power for Rodent Repeller Device Reply #2 – June 15, 2019, 12:24:01 pm Hi Klaus. A 2001 has the diode isolator under the hood. You would connect to the lead going to the house battery. I would make sure that this device doesn't draw too much current. Hopefully you have solar to maintain the house batteries. RonB
Re: Power for Rodent Repeller Device Reply #3 – June 15, 2019, 12:32:40 pm On your 2001 LD, access the coach battery 12-volt power at the battery isolator, under the hood on the driver's side fender. It looks like this.Amazon.com: Cole Hersee 48120 Battery Isolator: AutomotiveThe inner terminal goes to the alternator, the outer two terminal are 12-volt positive. used for the stating battery and the coach battery, use the coach battery connection for you repeller. Re: Power from coach batteries for rodent repeller device Reply #4 – June 15, 2019, 12:36:16 pm Thanks for the replies. I do have a 320 watt solar system which is why I think it is OK to have the device connected to the coach batteries and not to the engine battery. The device, by the way, works only between 11.8 and 13.4 volt.
Re: Power from coach batteries for rodent repeller device Reply #5 – June 15, 2019, 12:54:42 pm After further consideration I guess it might not be a good idea to have this device connected to the coach batteries - I just checked on the batteries and right now they have 13.8 volts, meaning the device would probably not work, at least not during daytime. I have to find the device - Where did I put the damn thing? - and see what happens when I connect it to the coach batteries. It might be better to connect the device to the engine battery (which is anyway most of the time connected to a trickle charger).
Re: Power from coach batteries for rodent repeller device Reply #6 – June 15, 2019, 04:01:40 pm I live in the southern AZ desert where Pack Rats have eaten the engine vacuum lines twice and one tire cover. I have tried noise makers, soap, dryer sheets, poison, but nothing worked. Only good thing is my dog won't come out from under the Dazy if a rat has moved in so at least I know I have a tenant. I finally bought a set of LED rope lights, laid them on the ground around the whole coach with extra lights under the engine area. I then plugged them into a timer. So far, after 6 months I haven't had a problem. Re: Power from coach batteries for rodent repeller device Reply #10 – June 15, 2019, 05:18:31 pm Langton, Thanks for the info that lights work for you. I was also skeptical of the noise device as I knew someone who used one in a sticks and bricks home and said it didn't work at all (not sure if they were going after insects or rodents).
Re: Power from coach batteries for rodent repeller device Reply #11 – June 15, 2019, 05:32:09 pm "AC"And when you are camping without hook ups, what then?
Re: Power from coach batteries for rodent repeller device Reply #12 – June 15, 2019, 07:33:21 pm The company who sells the device (with 2 external led's) on Amazon sent me 4 additional led's when I asked them what kind of electrical connectors are used on the device. That was not exactly an answer to my question - but I managed now to connect all 6 led's to the machine (which has itself 1 led built in). See attached video. The led's are very bright and the blinking pattern once in a while. On top of that the device also emits irregular normal and ultrasonic sounds. I will put all of this for now "loose" into my engine compartment and see what happens (or hopefully not happens). Maybe I never attach the cables with the led's permanently and let them rather hang around whenever the rig is parked anywhere overnight or longer.Klaus PS: The attached file pretends to be an audio file but is in fact a video file. For some reason video files are not allowed as attachments here, whereas audio files are.

Re: Power from coach batteries for rodent repeller device Reply #14 – June 16, 2019, 11:22:00 pm I have my LD parked behind my office building which is on the east side of Tucson. However, I had packrat problems and they ate some of the vacuum lines. When I installed the banks kit I replaced the vac lines. I had installed a couple of the "Rid a Rat" type led flashing units, but they did no good. Now I put two 60 w led bulbs under the hood and leave on 24/7 and have had no more issues.
Re: Power from coach batteries for rodent repeller device Reply #15 – June 18, 2019, 10:12:00 am I thinking - thats always a problem - rodents like most all animals like in a world that has light. It doesn't make sense to me that a random LED light repels said rodents. LED's come in all sort of wavelength. I have no idea what wavelength of 'light' rodent 'see'. IMHO to be effective it, the LED, most be a wavelength the rodent doesn't like. I live in an area the have both 'old' world and 'new' world rodents. My neighbor has chickens so we have rats all around us. I believe others when they say they have had rodent issues in their RV's. BUT I need a bit more convincing a radom LED string will repeal a random rodent. Having been born and raised on a farm the only thing that worked for us was a shotgun and hungry barn cats. BTW I do know that rodents do not like the smell of cat urine. <smile> maybe that is why I don't have problems in my RV.glen 1 Likes

That sounds like a great and easy to do idea. Do you have them directly under the hood, on top of the engine? My device with 6 blinking and very bright led's is now running without problems since 4 days - with the power coming from the always solar charged coach batteries.
