Re: How not to level your RV Reply #1 – June 28, 2018, 08:30:15 pm I've seen quite a few big Class A's that are "leveled" that way (and some even higher) in the cheap sites up front in a small local RV park. Just shake my head everytime I drive by.

Re: How not to level your RV Reply #3 – June 29, 2018, 02:23:30 am Wish I could remember who put up the pix on this site for my edification, but when I was trying to decide about my Big Foot Levelers, someone posted his LD, boondocking somewhere in the back of beyond. Underneath his levelers he had what looked like a set of ginormous Jenga blocks stacked, with what looked like three corners completely off the ground. I love my levelers, & I had to put a lynx bloc with a 1x12 under the curbside feet when parked at my aunt's retirement center in Denver because the street had so much crown, but that's as far as I want to go.Lynne

Not an awful thing when used by knowledgeable folks. And it can be deployed and recovered 'step-by-step' when done with care. 1 Likes
Re: How not to level your RV Reply #6 – June 29, 2018, 03:38:16 pm Lynne, I think that was me. I had both front wheels way off the ground, and both rear wheels on the ground with stone chocks at the inner rear wheels. I was willing to camp that way because the site had a spectacular view, because I had hydraulic levelers that made it easy to lift the front, because I carry multiple 4x4x12 cribbing blocks, and because I know how to do it safely. The setup was totally safe, as Chip points out, but it took several cycles of the hydraulic rams to achieve a level rig.On the other hand - last winter I watched someone put wood blocks under the front scissors jacks for his trailer. He used two 4x4 pieces, stacked laterally, on each side of the front. He ran the jacks down to that 8" high, 4" wide stack, loaded them to level, retracted the hitch jack, then went to his rear jacks to raise them to stabilize the rig. If you understand what I saw, he had two scissors jacks mounted laterally sitting on 8" high, 4" wide lateral blocks. His wheels were not chocked. Of course, as soon as the rear scissors jack began to raise the back, the trailer rolled forward, dropping the front of the trailer and bending the front scissors jacks backward, destroying them.If you gave me enough cribbing blocks, I would feel totally safe walking around under my RV with it 6 feet in the air, but then, I was trained how to use cribbing blocks as part of a heavy rescue class. Do it right and it is totally safe. Do it wrong, and you risk damage and injury.Ken F in WY 1 Likes

Re: How not to level your RV Reply #8 – June 29, 2018, 08:51:49 pm Ken--Thx for the details...I just remember being amazed at the notion of Jenga with an RV. If that pic is still accessible, this would be a great place to share it--it was pretty amazing.I do love hearing about the exploits of the various well-educated LD Wizards (engineers, mechanics, just plain smart people)...a Lynx bloc & 1x12 is the extent of my daring-do... Re: How not to level your RV Reply #9 – June 29, 2018, 08:57:56 pm Lynne, that IS the pic. The prior one was cropped to show, in more detail, the cribbing blocks. The full image shows WHY I chose to stay there. With the right training and equipment, and with 5 minutes of set-up time, I had an absolutely delightful spot.Ken F in WY

And adds another to the poplulation that you mentioned in your earlier note using sicissors jacks. 2 Likes
Re: How not to level your RV Reply #11 – June 30, 2018, 03:55:28 pm Joel, exactly right. I would never post written directions how to do cribbing, but if anyone is ever camped near me and wants to see how I use my cribbing blocks, I would be delighted to share the info. That way, I could be comfortable that the person understood the key issues involved in safely using cribbing blocks.Ken F in WY (near the Tetons for the summer)
