Recommended Spares
We have a 2015 MB with 23000 miles on it and are getting ready for a 5000 mile or so trip this fall to the Utah, Idaho, Arizona National Park corner and would like some input on recommended spares. We currently carry spare wiper blades, engine oil, coolant, filters and a full set of fuses for both the chassis and the coach. Considering the age of the rig, and where we are going, any recommendations? We also carry a full set of tools so we can handle most minor repairs.

Thanks, Ian, 2015 MB "silver Fox"

Ian, may I suggest you do a search on "spare parts" (under Community on the home page) and you will find numerous posts/threads/lists on this topic.

We like to travel light. I normally carry a small tool set, fuses, elec tape, duct tape and a credit card. Our 2002 MB has 123000 miles. We have only had it for 2 years. But no major issues with it on the road.

;D  I'd bet that you will find WalMarts in most of those locations. The west isn't as wild as it once was!   ;)

Egads, Ian. Your rig is virtually new. Insert key, fire up, go! 😎  — Jon

I think you should be good.  Down the road, you might want to consider getting a spare dump valve to carry in the rig.

If you're anything like my lovely wife, she is always misplacing her keys.  I always insist we bring a spare whenever we make a road trip!   :-X

Ian,

I’ve stepped up my game on “spares” to include a backup coach water pump, a back up dump valve assembly and now litium ion jump battery packs (2). And like Harold, backup water filters for my two stage water filtration system.

While I do have the assorted fuses for the coach system, I still need to obtain the fuses for the e450.

Always something to think about.

Hi,

I have now added a spare dump valve, cover, gaskets, lithium battery packs ( they work well on powering the remote microphone which transmits to my hearing aids) and spare filters for my fresh water filtration system. I need to check my jumper cables to see if they are long enough to go from the house batteries to the chassis battery. Also thinking about a tow strap, would have to be a hefty one, don't know if they are available.

Thanks, Ian

For the chassis, I carry a small assortment of liquids, a full set of fuses, extra bulbs, a radiator and heater hose patch kit.
The only engine parts carried are a pair of ignition coils, two spark plugs and a spare serpentine belt.

For the coach, an assortment of glues, solvents, tapes, wire and adhesives are carried, along with two dump valves, a water pump, assorted plumbing and electrical parts, a lot of various replacements for latches and other small hardware bits.
Spare control boards for the refrigerator and water heater.
A lot of other small stuff is also carried, such as screws, nuts and bolts, extra batteries, velcro and zip-ties.

To use the spares, a good collection of hand a power tools are carried, including a battery powered drill, battery impact drivers (3/8" for the LD and 1/2" for the Jeep), a Ryobi One + lithium battery jumper, Map gas torch, and two large hydraulic jacks.  Battery jumper cables good idea too. Digital voltmeter and a manometer.
I find  use a 1/4" drive socket set often, combined with the 3/8" impact driver.
A 12-volt air pump is carried in both the LD and the jeep and a CO2 tire inflator in the Jeep.
A full kit for changing a tire is carried, even you can't do it, a good samaritan may help...if you have the proper tools.

The last two important spares are a cell phone with Coach-Net on speed dial and a credit card with high limit.

A 2015 is a pretty new rig, granted, but plenty of stuff can still go south, and usually at a very inopportune time. My list of take-alongs and spares is based primarily on this criterion: If I needed  .... and didn't have  .... , what level of inconvenience, hassle, delay, or distress would result!? For one example, the dump hose wriggles its way out of the tube and takes up residence on the side of the road; one is far from any source of RV supply and the tanks are full. Got a spare dump hose and fittings?  :o

Not "borrowing trouble", certainly, and one can't anticipate every potential mishap, breakage, or loss, but a carrying a carefully selected list of "spares" can save a lot of grief.  ::)

I'm with you on this and I bring lots of tools plus bailing wire duct tape etc. I've always done remote boondocking and when my 1994  pickup with a slide in camper was only two years old it broke down in the middle of nowhere in the Utah desert. Something went pop and the clutch pedal went to the floor. After a couple of hours of contortionism under the steering wheel, some bailing wire and super glue I was down the road. I pulled into Ford in Moab to get it fixed and the mechanic was so impressed with my job he said it would probably get me home. Needless to say I got it fixed right in Moab but bailing wire and super glue saved my arse.
Discuss anything with anyone and disagree agreeably. Always be polite and respectful.

Super glue I have, but will add a length of bailing wire.  :)
