Some old Chevy van chassis had the ECM mounted behind the driver's seat, with a fat bundle with a zillion wires leading forward to the engine compartment. Why would they do this? I'm guessing it was because the engine compartment is a VERY hostile environment for electronics, with heat, vibration, and most of all ignition noise, and they had not yet learned how to "harden" the ECM against all that.
