Not A Great Lazy Daze Pet???
I love my furry pets but some of our pets have fins in place of paws. Taking a dog or a cat in the LD is a bit of a trick for some of us.

Having a friend or a family member stay home to feed our pets is fine but this can present a logistical nightmare for our loved ones if fish are involved.

Recently my DW set up two 5 gallon tanks for her new Beta Fish. Oh boy!

My sister volunteered (kinda) to feed Sooty our cat. Asking her to drop by the house multiple times each day to feed him and two Betas is just too much to ask.

My solution...automatic fish feeders. I hope they work. We are in “beta” testing now.

I set up two feeders per tank. AM for one feeder and PM for the second feeder. This will provide food for 2 weeks or a total of 28 meals per tank.

I created two plastic covers that I’ve made cutouts in to facilitate the feeders operation. A bit of a project but so far so good.

With a family and furry friend (Sans cat) trip to Yosemite scheduled for April, I am in the critical development stages of the automatic system.

Here are some pics of my project in case anyone is interested in feeding your fish while on vacation. Yikes!

I can't resist pointing out that the problem of feeding the cat could be solved if you just left the covers off the betta tanks. Come to think of it, that would solve the problem of feeding the bettas as well.

Well now,

Three things wrong there. 1) Not enough fish to fill the cat...2) Starving cat...and oh yeah...3) Sooty’s strictly an outdoor cat.

Nice try Andy.

"Three things wrong there."

Not to mention an extremely unhappy spouse, which ranks above the other three.

Train a cheapie webcam or two on the tank, so you can say hi, and keep an eye on the proceedings when you're afield. Close enough to see if food is dispensed. Have a designated fisherman (probably a better term for that) who can step in and take over if you see something's amiss.

Chip,

Thanks. My sister will be feeding Sooty (the cat) every day and check to insure the timed fish feeder is working well.

This testing period prior to the family trip is giving me an opportunity to debug the system. I’ve already isolated a couple of “patches”. Still a few weeks before the trip. It looks very promising so far.

Thanks for the advice.
