Keeping The Solar Panels Attached To The Roof February 24, 2018, 01:55:37 pm There was a recent discussion of the need for screws to hold solar anchor feet to the roof. I was up on the roof this morning cleaning and checking things like the wingnut bolt that hold the panel frame to the anchor feet were secure. A few years ago one came out. Since it was a trailing one, no harm, no way for wind to get under it and potentially pull the panel up. If such happened on the leading edge I doubt a screw would make any difference. Anywho, it might be prudent to make sure your wingnuts are tight. For the record, I don't have screws holding mine down. Mike Sylvester did the first two and AM Solar put the third one on. No screws were used. And we are 105,000 miles down the road. It has been said that AM Solar uses screws - maybe they do sometimes, but they did not on our rig as we watched the installation from the elevated peanut gallery. 1 Likes
Re: Keeping The Solar Panels Attached To The Roof Reply #1 – February 24, 2018, 02:38:54 pm I installed my own solar system and did not drill into the roof.I used VHB tape on the feet and then covered them with Eternabond. It's all been up there for more than 7 years with no issues.I too have had a wingnut come off, so good advise from above to check them periodically. The less you puncture holes in the roof, the better. Especially on these nice one piece roofs LD uses. 2 Likes
Re: Keeping The Solar Panels Attached To The Roof Reply #2 – February 26, 2018, 10:45:13 am I installed my own solar panels on our camper. I used VHB tape on all of the feet and a single stainless screw per foot. My daughter now has the camper and no issues at all so far.VHB tape is pretty amazing stuff. 1 Likes
