Heads Up Chicken Little, The Sky is Doing Something Tonight... December 13, 2017, 01:33:32 pm The Geminid meteor shower peaks tonight, Dec 13, 2017. The moon sets early (2:34pm) so the sky should be dark for most of us until after midnight (3:46amEST, 14 Dec 2017). It is to cold in the DC area, but maybe some of you in more southerly latitudes can catch a falling star. 1 Likes

Reply #3 – December 13, 2017, 09:07:27 pm Thx for the info, Kent...I missed the Orionids in October & Leonids in November due to clouds & hadn't heard anything on the news about this one. It was sunny most of today but had clouded up when I came out of church a little while ago; been so blasted windy today--despite the upper 50s temps, it felt like 40s--maybe the clouds will blow out by 2-ish. I do love the majesty & mystery of these sorts of events.Lynne
Re: Heads Up Chicken Little, The Sky is Doing Something Tonight... Reply #4 – December 14, 2017, 04:52:03 pm Well, I went out last night and stood in the cold, about 30 degrees, light wind but it cut into one, under crystal clear skies, for about half an hour, doing a bunch of 30 second exposures. In all that time, I saw one meteor, and it was between exposures. Pretty frustrating...Ken F in NM
Re: Heads Up Chicken Little, The Sky is Doing Something Tonight... Reply #5 – December 14, 2017, 05:01:34 pm I wandered out, too; almost as cold, and with the 'light pollution' of south SJ, didn't see a thing in the sky except a couple redeye flights on approach to SJ airport and a police helicopter. Maybe tonight ....

Thankfully, she let me sleep.
Re: Heads Up Chicken Little, The Sky is Doing Something Tonight... Reply #7 – December 15, 2017, 09:26:46 am Cloudy in north Missouri & forecast indicated no sun 'til Friday, which was all the motivation I needed to stay under the covers...& Thursday was a dreary day in the 30s, indeed. Friday has dawned with sunshine headed into the high 40s, with Saturday predicted into the high 50s, so Lilly & I will have a farm night in the LD to be ready for Saturday.Lynne
Re: Heads Up Chicken Little, The Sky is Doing Something Tonight... Reply #8 – December 15, 2017, 11:06:36 am I slept through the event. I caught a bad cold after reading the how to stay well thread, haven't had a cold like this in 15 years or so it seems. I blame the thread. 3 Likes

In my dreams, right? 🎅🏻Kent
Re: Heads Up Chicken Little, The Sky is Doing Something Tonight... Reply #10 – December 15, 2017, 11:52:11 am Well, here in the sunny south, Georgia, that is, I went out on the night of the 13th around 8PM and saw 11 meteors and one piece of space junk burn up within about an hour. Then, last night, I went out with the grandkids and watched the Hubble Space Telescope and then the ISS go over, followed by seeing 3 more Geminids fall. All were 2nd magnitude or brighter. 2nd magnitude is the brightness of the 3 stars in Orion's belt (more or less). Most were much brighter. Sorry about those who didn't get to see any. You still might see a few tonight, but that chances are growing very slim of that happening.Ken 2 Likes

Re: Heads Up Chicken Little, The Sky is Doing Something Tonight... Reply #12 – December 15, 2017, 03:03:27 pm thanks for the well wishes. It is just a cold, not the flue or any thing bad. I think it is funny though that I had just read the thread and thought how lucky I was that I have not had the cold or flue for years. Then I get a bad cold. At least Im home and retired so I am not spreading it around.

Reply #13 – December 15, 2017, 03:46:04 pm Sorry for your misery, John.We were lucky to see the Space X resupply module go up today from Cape Kennedy. We were actually in a parking lot in Melbourne Beach (30=/- miles south) and watched it until it disappeared. Still very cool!TinaP2006 MB "Wild Thing"Taking the Florida Sun 2 Likes
