Our Painful HOA
Margee and I spent parts of 3 days cleaning our 10 LD cushions with Woolite Upholstery Cleaner.  We're  pleased with the results and especially pleased with how fresh they smell.  As a last step we left them on the driveway for two (2) afternoons to make sure they were completely dry.  So today, we received a notice that we violated HOA policies by leaving furniture in the front of our home!  Let me see how I can say this ... hum ... I can't find a way to say anything without going postal.  However, my email response was strong.

And . . . is there a fine or punishment of some kind involved?  Did a neighbor complain?  Petty people can be so very petty!  But, OY, it really does chap one's drawers when this sort of thing happens.

My sympathies in triplicate!

Our HOA sent me a letter complaining that I parked my camper overnight in front of my house, in alleged violation of their rules.  The HOA president gave it to his daughter, who gave it to my daughter at school, who gave it to me.

That pissed me off.

I carried the letter to his house and explained to him, face to face, that if he ever sent a message to me via my child, I would carry it right back to his house and place it where he would be embarrassed for anyone, other than his doctor, to see it.  I next told him that I was joining the home owners committee and when would the next meeting be?  He said the committee was full.  I told him that I would be there regardless, so count on it and plan to have another chair at the table.

I attended meetings for about a year and discovered that bullying the neighbors was their habit, but that they quickly backed down when confronted, face to face at the meeting.

I never received another letter for my camper, my boat, my fence height, my open garage door, or anything else.  I really hate bullies.

Sorry your hard work and rewarding outcome was diminished with such trivial nonsense.  I suppose one should let such things go, but I would be distracted from now on wondering which one of my neighbors is so bored, petty, or unhappy that they felt the need to complain to the POA about drying cushions in the driveway on a nice fall day rather than just coming over and having a nice chat to see what two were doing.

I could jump in here with both feet but my diatribe would not be PC!

Suffice it to say that I would never live in a place where others demand a code of conduct.

We don't have a HOA. We have a tax-supported ($25/parcel/year) Community Services District.  Aside from a few procedural trivias its about the same.   I had a trailer in the side yard for 5 years, occasionally with a tan tarp.   Within a week of replacing the tan tarp with blue one,  I received a violation notice that the trailer was visible from the street.  The trailer became 'invisible' after placing movable planters in front of the RV gate with the fiction they would grow high enough to hide the trailer.  After 32 years here,  I could go on.
And on.
And on.
Und so weiter.

We live in a CSD as well but do have an HOA.  The list of rules is extensive but we read them beforehand and that is what we agreed to when we purchased our property. Yes, it's a PITA at times but overall I like having some consistency so things don't get trashed out like so many other communities I've seen.  It's interesting listening to those that live in our community that have not read any of the rules yet constantly complain about them.

I can relate to the tarp issue as we have that rule also. Brown is fine, blue is not.

Folks, I think it best if we put this thread to rest before it degenerates into a lengthy gripe session. There are positives and negatives about HOAs but I don't think this is a place to discuss them.
